“How was your birthday?” I ask.

“Perfect.”

I smile softly over at him in the darkness as we stare at each other.

“Thank you for making it so special,” he whispers as he leans over and kisses me softly.

His kiss is tender and loving, filled with so much feeling.

Every emotion comes to a head inside of my body as I feel my heart freefall from my chest.

I think I love him.

“Knock, knock. Housekeeping.”

I wake with a start. Where am I?

“Housekeeping,” a voice calls through the door. Shit, I’m at the hotel. I look over to see that I am in bed alone. Henley isn’t here.

I jump up and run to the door. “Come back later, please,” I call.

“Would you like the morning paper?” the voice calls.

“No thank you.” Jeez, what time is it? Why is this woman waking me up for the daily paper?

I see a note on the side table.

Gone to the gym,

Back soon.

H x

I smile. He’s visiting his dad.

What a beautiful man he is, spending every morning with his unwell father.

Gah . . . just when I think he can’t get any better, he goes ahead and proves me wrong.

I float into the bathroom, still high from last night. Right . . . now to make myself simply irresistible.

I sip my coffee and read the morning paper, and my phone beeps a text. It’s Henley.

Where are you?

Excitement runs through my body. Just a text from him sends me into overdrive. I reply.

In the restaurant having breakfast.

Come down.

Another text bounces straight back.

On my way.

I go back to reading my paper, pretending not to be the biggest fangirl in the history of life.

I have to be smart about this. If I want him forever, and I do, I can’t mess this up.
