“What the hell is happening?” Carol cries as she runs across the road. “Are you okay, Rebecca?”

Rebecca is sobbing in my arms, and I look up to see Henley has come out to the commotion. He’s in his boxer shorts too.

“It’s not what you think,” John yells. “Rebecca . . . I love you.”

“It’s exactly what I think,” she yells. She’s lost all control. Tears and snot are all over her face.

“Let’s go inside and talk about this in private.”

“No,” Rebecca yells. “Go back to your whore. She knows me. She talks to me every fucking day. I pay her fucking wages. How could you?”

“She means nothing. I’m not going anywhere. I love you.”

Blake pushes him by the chest, and he stumbles back. “You get in your fucking car and disappear before I kick your fucking ass.” He pushes him again, and he falls down onto his back.

Blake is now going to kill him for real. This is getting out of control.

“Henley,” I yell. “Do something.”

Henley steps in and pushes Blake back from John. “That’s enough. Leave, John.”

“This is none of your business,” John growls.

“Leave before I call the police,” I yell.

“You’re my fucking wife, Rebecca,” John calls. “She means nothing.”

Rebecca is hysterical, and Blake takes her into his arms to protect her from John.

John, realizing that it’s the whole street against him, eventually gets into the smashed-up car and drives away.

Rebecca is heartbroken, crying uncontrollably on Blake’s chest. We all stand around, shocked to silence, unsure what to say. Rebecca’s cries echo through our sleepy little street.

“How could anybody ever want to be married?” Henley mutters under his breath.

I look over at him, my faith in men completely and utterly ruined.

“Fuck. Off.”

Chapter 20

Henley

Rebecca cries against Blake’s chest as we all watch, unsure what to say.

“Come on, Bec, you’re staying at my house tonight,” Juliet says.

“That’s a good idea.” Blake nods. “Okay?” he asks her softly.

Rebecca finally nods. “Okay.”

With her tucked safely under his arm, they follow Juliet over to her house. I trail behind them, unsure what to say.

They walk up the front steps, and Juliet opens the door. Blake and Rebecca walk inside, and I go to follow them in, and Juliet steps in front of me, blocking the doorway.

“No.”

I frown.
