“I need to get that. Otherwise, whoever it is will be bothering us.”

Megan huffs and sits up. “You need to have that phone surgically removed.”

“You don’t need to remind me,” I glance at the caller ID and frown. “It’s Natalie. She’s probably calling to check on us.”

“Well, get rid of her quickly,” Megan tugs at her t-shirt. “This is coming off very shortly.”

God, why did she have to tease me like that? I look away so she doesn’t distract me and answer the call.

“Hey, Natalie.”

“Dad, can you get over here? I’m sorry to bother you, but I need your help.”

The sound of Natalie’s voice has me sitting up.

“What’s wrong?”

Beside me, Megan sits forward, her smile fading as she watches me. She mouths something at me, but I ignore her while I listen to Natalie.

“It’s Anna and Mom. They’re over at my place demanding to know where you are. Apparently, they’ve been to your place and can’t find you.”

“What do they want?”

“Something about you needing to deal with all this mess. Anna’s having a full-on tantrum. She’s ranting and raving in my living room right now.” Natalie sounds desperate. “Please, Dad, can you come? I don’t want to bother you, but I really don’t know what to do. Mom keeps telling me that I shouldn’t force family out of the house, and she’s raising her voice to me as well.”

This makes me feel torn. I want to stay with Megan, but my daughter needs my help. Anna and Caitlin are having a meltdown, more than likely about the day before. I’m not about to leave her with that.

“Okay, sit tight. I’ll be right over.” I hang up, looking over at Megan. She is frowning at me.

“What’s going on?” she asks, looking worried.

“Anna and Caitlin are harassing Natalie trying to find me. I need to go and rescue her,” I sigh and touch her back. “Sorry, I don’t want to leave you…”

“I’ll come with you.”

“What?” I stare at her. “But Anna assaulted you.”

“Screw that. Natalie’s my friend. I’m going to help her,” Megan stands up. “Just let me get dressed, and don’t you dare leave without me.”

I can’t help but smile at her order. “I wouldn’t dare.”

Chapter 17

Megan

ItoldJoelthatI wanted to help my friend, but as we pull up outside Natalie’s house and hear the shouting from the street, I wonder what the hell I’m doing. I vowed that I wouldn’t have anything to do with Anna after all of this, and here I am about to go toe-to-toe with her after she sent me to the hospital.

All I can hope is that she won’t start a fight with me. I’m too sore to do anything, and I’d be too worried about the baby in my belly.

My hand touches my stomach, and I find myself smiling. I’m pregnant with Joel’s baby. I never expected that to happen. My birth control had evidently failed me. At least that hasn’t harmed the baby, from what we can tell after the ultrasound. The doctor says that it was still very early days, so I do want to be careful.

I hadn’t thought about having kids for a while. I’ve still got plenty of time. But now it’s happening, and I’m not as scared as I originally thought I would be. Especially when I know Joel is going to be there for me. He’s not going to abandon me nor the baby. He’s not the type to do that.

Thankfully I never got pregnant with Eric. That would have been another nightmare in itself.

“Megan,” Joel has pulled into a space outside Natalie’s house, and now he’s watching me. “You can stay here. You don’t need to come in.”

“No, I’m coming in,” I unbuckle my seatbelt. “Strength in numbers and all, right?”
