“Carina? Are you all right?”

Jolted from that disturbing image, my eyelids spring open and I find Juliette watching me with a concerned frown. Since my brain isn’t exactly firing on all six cylinders, it takes a second or two to realize that she’s patiently waiting for an answer.

I clear my throat, hoping my voice comes out sounding unaffected. “Yeah, it’s all good.”

She points to a door further down the hallway. “I was just on my way to the bathroom.”

The ache between my legs continues to thrum an uncomfortable beat. Ford’s unexpected dismissal has done nothing to stomp out that particular fire.

Unfortunately, there’s only one way I’m going to find relief.

“Me, too. I need to rub one out.”

She blinks before her eyes widen. “I can’t tell if you’re being serious or not.”

“One hundred percent serious.” I pat my little cross-body purse. “Thankfully, I brought my trusty vibe with me. See? What did I tell you about horny days and public restrooms?”

Her lips form a shocked little O as she retreats a step as if I’m contagious and she’s trying to avoid the spread of infection. “You know what? I’m gonna hold it.”

I shrug and push away from the wall. “Suit yourself.”

With that, I hightail it to the bathroom.

If Ford is under the misguided delusion that I’m going to spend the rest of the night all hot and bothered thanks to him, he couldn’t be more wrong.

Chapter Sixteen

Ford

I saunter into the lecture hall and immediately spot Carina in her usual seat before beelining in that direction and dropping down beside her. Cameron walks through the door a few seconds later and glares when he sees that I’ve already staked my claim. I flash him a gloating grin.

If he knows what’s good for him, he’ll finally get the hint and stay the fuck away from her. She gives me a bit of side eye but otherwise doesn’t say a word. After the way I left her hanging in the locker room, I kind of figured this would be her reaction. She seemed surprised when I told her that she should leave.

Her list of rules pissed me off.

Should it have?

Probably not.

I’m not looking to announce to the world that I plan on boning my ex-stepsister. Although, it’s not like either of us have anything to be ashamed of. We’re consenting adults who can do whatever the hell we want.

Namely, each other.

When I glance toward the front of the room, Dr. Betsworth smiles before getting class underway. The woman has turned out to be a shameless flirt. Not to mention persistent. She keeps trying to get me alone after class and so far, I’ve been able to avoid it. I have the feeling that it’s only a matter of time before my luck—and excuses—run out.

Carina grumbles something under her breath that I can’t quite make out before straightening on her chair.

Is it possible that she’s jealous?

Hmmm…it’s an interesting thought.

It’s almost tempting to flirt back with our professor just to see how much I can wind her up. Except, I’ve never been one to play games and I certainly don’t want to start with Carina.

Instead, I stretch out my legs and manspread just enough for our knees to touch. A sizzle of electricity zips through me at the innocuous contact. Her wide gaze slices to mine. After a second or two, she shifts, moving away so that we’re no longer resting against each other. The loss is instantaneous.

She sits coiled tight.

Her shoulders hunched.
