Page 93 of Love You Never

“Maybe.”

I shift from one foot to the other and echo the response. “Maybe?”

I’ve never known Juliette to be anything less than cordial. Always pleasant to be around. Normally, her nose is buried in a thick tome of a science book. As a pre-med major, I can certainly understand why. Even though she’s rocket science smart, she still studies her ass off.

So this attitude…

It’s throwing me off my game.

“Before I let you in, I’d like to know what your intentions are with my girl.”

“My intentions…”

“Yeah.” She leans against the doorjamb as a fierce expression settles across her face. “I know you’ve been sneaking in every night and staying over.” She drops her voice as dull color stains her cheeks. “FYI—you’re loud as fuck.”

It takes effort to fight back the smile that trembles around my lips. “Sorry about that. We’ll try to keep it down from now on.”

She glares, her face turning almost beet red. “I could hear you through my noise cancelling headphones.”

“We’ll, you know, try and play the quiet game while doing it.”

She rolls her eyes. “Are you two together now? Is this a thing?”

All the humor bubbling up inside me vanishes with those two questions. “I’m not sure.” There’s a beat of uncomfortable silence before I blurt, “Has she mentioned anything to you?”

Damn.

I didn’t mean for that to slip out.

There’s a flicker in her dark eyes before it’s quickly masked. “Just that you two had an understanding. Friends-with-benefits or something like that.”

“Frenemies-with-benefits,” I mutter reluctantly.

“Yeah, maybe that was it,” she agrees with a nod.

All the emotion swelling inside me nosedives before exploding on impact and erupting into a fiery ball of flames. Without another word—which is almost worse—she steps aside, allowing me into the apartment. As I walk past, our brief convo circles through my head.

What the hell am I doing?

It’s painfully obvious this girl doesn’t want anything serious.

With me.

She’s here for a good time, not a long time.

It’s not like Carina hasn’t been perfectly upfront about that.

More confusion spirals through me as I stutter to a stop and lift my fist to rap my knuckles against the bedroom door.

“Come in,” she calls out, sounding far more cheery than usual. Probably because she hasn’t figured out who it is.

I turn the handle and push open the door before stepping inside. She glances at me from the middle of the queen-sized bed and does a double take.

“Hey,” she says with surprise.

“Hi.” When she continues to stare, I say with forced casualness, “I thought we could work on our project.” I glance at the books spread out on the bed. “Although, if you’re busy, we can do it another time.”

At this point, I’m wishing that I hadn’t stopped by. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that getting involved with her in the first place was a huge mistake. The intention had been to fuck her out of my system, not make her even more of an obsession.
