“He’s your brother,” Rafe laughs. “He’s got the family charm, I see.”
“Mama should have left it at three.” My other brothers are all older than Michael who was a surprise baby.
“Well, you remember how you were at twenty-two. He’s the same…cocky and too sure of himself.”
Little does he know that at twenty-two, I might have been but at twenty-five, I learned the hard way that sometimes life just smacks the hell out of you, just to prove it can.
Sighing, I push her out of my head again. Katrina. I wish I could forget her. Her long, brown curls wrapped around my fist, her bright hazel eyes sparkling in the summer sun. Her sweet curves wrapped up in tight jeans and a sweater that was so soft, my fingers itch to touch it again.
I used to pick her up and she’d wrap her legs around my middle while I carried her around she was so tiny. Curvy as hell but barely five foot two to my six foot two.
Why the hell can’t I forget this woman?
Fall. My favorite and yet my least favorite season. My wife died in the fall and my first love jetted off, leaving me with a Dear Hank letter and a permanently broken heart.
Yeah, fall.
My phone rings and I jump, growling under my breath.
“What!” I bark into the receiver.
“Well, hello to you too, Daddy.” My daughter’s biting tone makes me chuckle. She’s got a lot of sass wrapped up in her tiny package. She’s only about five foot three and barely one hundred ten soaking wet but she packs a wallop for her size.
“Are you on your way home yet?”
“Ummm. Yeah. About that.”
Unease creeps along my spine. “What’s going on?” I don’t need any more surprises from my daughter. She already dragged her ass home with a giant, stunned man in tow. They’re on their honeymoon now. The one I insisted she take after they finally realized that their drunken marriage was more real than they thought
“I’m going to be home soon,” she soothes me, letting my panicked heart slow down.
“Okay. So what’s the problem?”
“I just wanted to give you a heads-up. I’m applying for that open position.”
My heart sinks. But I can’t tell her no. She deserves this shot. Even if it scares the hell out of me.
“You’ll be on probation just like any other hire.”
“And working with my uncle and cousin. Yeah, I know. I’m sure it’s not gonna be a lot of fun.”
“And we’re not going easy on you.”
“I would expect nothing less.”
“Okay, baby. I’ll see you soon. Enjoy your honeymoon.”
I hang up my phone and groan. “She’s gonna do it.” Sympathetic groans answer my rough voice.
Yep, I have to be a boss and not a father which is gonna be damn hard. This is gonna suck.
CHAPTER 2
Kat
“Well, what do you think?” Cassidy Light smiles at me. “I think we’re gonna rock this town. You’ve got more of the pastry bent than I do and you’ll fill in some of the gaps in my training.”
I nod my head and study the figures on paper. “These look pretty good.”
