“Okay, fine, it is what you think.”

She got out of her chair and came over, pulling me into a huge hug. “I’m so happy for you.”

“We didn’t do anything,” I said against her shoulder.

She pulled back and gripped my shoulders. “But it’s still a big step for you, Jill! You were eating ice cream with someone you just met, and you enjoyed it.”

“How do you know I enjoyed it?”

“Because your skin has turned a nice shade of pink,” she said, smiling.

Drats. This was what got me in trouble with Rich. He could read me like an open book because I couldn’t hide my feelings. Well, I was going to do better with Luc. I could stand my ground.

In order to change the subject, I decided now was a good time to ask Becca about a therapist. “So, I wanted to tell you that I think I’m ready to talk to a therapist.”

“Really?” Becca was looking at me with big eyes, and I couldn’t help but laugh—another thing I had missed doing in the last two years. It felt good to laugh again.

“Yes,” I said firmly. I was going to do this. I needed to get my life back together again, and I was sure the therapist would tell me to stay away from Luc. It was what I needed—someone on the outside telling me to stay away from him for my own good.

Becca clapped her hands. “Great! I have just the person. She already has you down for Mondays at one in the afternoon, so I’ll take you there tomorrow.”

“What?” Now it was my turn to look at her with big eyes.

“I was going to drag you to see her even if you didn’t want to. She’s a good friend of mine. I trust her, and I think you’ll like her too.”

I gave her the stink eye but couldn’t help but feel loved that Becca was still looking out for me.

She continued, “Because you made me such a yummy breakfast, I’m going to let you in on a little secret.”

“Oh?”

She looked down for a moment and ran her tongue over her lips, then said slowly, “Brandon—”

“Oh! How was your night?” This time I gavehera knowing look, but Becca waived my question away.

“We’re just coworkers who have fun together, Jill. He’s like a friendly plus-one, and in return, I’m his plus one when he needs one. And if you must know, we danced the night away and then he took me home. That was it, nothing special.”

I eyed her. “That’s it? What about that guy you told me you had a crush on?”

“It’s not Brandon,” Becca said quickly.

“You could have fooled me with the way you two were looking at each other last night.”

Becca turned a nice shade of pink at this, and I knew I had hit the mark. Why was she denying it?

“There’s nothing going on,” she insisted.

Clearly, she was not ready to admit it. “Lame. You two should go on a real date sometime.”

“Why? Neither one of us wants to get tied down.” This comment came out with such venom I knew there was more to this story than she was letting on.

“Hey, I’m not going to dig, you two just look so sweet together.”

“Yeah, that’s what people say.” Her anger deflated, and she forced a smile back on her face. “Now, before you so rudely interrupted me, as I was saying, Brandon knows of another party in a few weeks that we can go to. He was able to get us in, and I’m taking you with me. Last night didn’t start off great, but I think it really helped you open up a little bit.”

I began to shake my head. “Becca, I don’t think that’s a good idea. It’s too much too soon. Look at how I reacted last night.”

“Last night wastoo much too soon, but the next party isn’t until a few weeks from now. You’ll have plenty of time to continue to get used to your new life. You’ll be coming with me again, and I’ll look after you. Besides, did I mention it’s going to be a masquerade party?”
