“Well, tell that to him.” She shook her head before I could get another word in. “But we were not talking about me.” She waggled a finger at me. “You’re a sly one changing the subject like that.”

I smirked and walked back to the couch. “I am not ready to be with another boy, even if you say he’s a good guy. Plus, Luc stood me up last night and then tried to lock me up.”

“Okay, yes, the locking up part is definitely troublesome. But he didn’t stop you from leaving in the end, and he changed his mind about the ball and came looking for you. I see how you look at him too—all smoldering eyes like you can’t get enough of him.”

“I do not!”

“You so do.” She smiled.

I was about to throw a pillow at her when we both smelled the smoke at the same time.

“The chicken!” we both yelled. Just like old times, neither one of us could cook.

Luc

“Sulking doesn’t lookgood on you,” Brandon said, sitting at my kitchen counter with a chicken leg in his hand.

“I don’t understand why I can’t go out with him to hunt this parasite down!” I growled.

“You know it’s because we would all tear the guy limb from limb if we saw him first,” Jacob said, taking a big bite out of a fried chicken leg.

“I would not.” Brandon cocked an eyebrow at me, and I added, “I would bring him back and torture him slowly before tearing him apart limb from limb.”

“Exactly,” Brandon said.

“Well, why doesn’t Mom let us? She’s just as mad as we are at Pac hurting Sandy!” Bruno said. He was the youngest of us all and remembered the least about what had happened to our sister, but after all the stories we had told, he felt like he knew what had happened. Sandy also basically raised him, so he felt super protective of her.

“And why does it take this long?” I said, standing up and pacing. “I would have already found the guy if Dad had just let me go.”

“Dredge is the best scout Dad has, and the others in the pack listen to him. Sit down and eat some food. And stop pacing, you’re driving me crazy,” Jacob said.

“I’m driving you crazy?” I whirled on him.

Brandon immediately came between us. He was the calmer sibling and the most like Mom. He stuck a chicken leg in my mouth, and I bit a big chunk out of it before plopping myself down on the sofa unceremoniously. All this waiting was going to drive me crazy, much less having my other brothers here doing the same.

“We’re all wound up and know exactly how you feel, but Dad gave orders, and we have to stay put until we hear otherwise,” Brandon said firmly.

I growled in response but continued to gnaw at the chicken leg.

Seeing that I was a bit calmer, Bruno ventured to ask, “Remind me again why Dad wants him alive?”

Brandon answered, which I was thankful for because I was so mad we hadn’t heard anything from Dredge yet: “Pac saved Dad’s life once.”

“Sandy fell in love with him, didn’t she?” Bruno asked.

“So hard. She thought he was her mate,” Jacob said.

“Until he tried to pawn her off to another pack,” I spit out. I still couldn’t believe Dad had banished Pac instead of killing him. Now look at the problem we were in!

A pounding at the door made us all jump on full alert. I marched over and swung the door open.

Dredge stumbled in. “Hey, Luc, do you have any water?” he gasped out.

I signaled Bruno to grab some water and followed Dredge to the sofa. “Well, did you get him?”

“We did. All is well. I escorted him back to the pack, and he’s under lock and key until further notice. I told Dad I’d come tell you personally so you could hear it from me and not someone else.”

“What do you mean until further notice?” I growled, ignoring the rest of what he said. “He should have been taken care of immediately.”
