“You saved me,” I said, looking at Miti. That was one truth I could cope with right now.

“Yes, but I couldn’t have done it without you. You saved yourself too,” she said, pointing to my chest. “You believed in yourself. Why else would you have let me pull out your hair?”

“You pulled out her hair?” Luc asked with an expression of horror.

“Well, pulling outmyhair wouldn’t have made such a big impression on the guards,” Miti said, giving Luc a confused look.

This made me laugh. The absurdness of our situation, and Miti talking about pulling out my hair, added in with Luc’s sudden fear that Miti would do it again, made me bubble over. I laughed and laughed till all I could do was lean against Luc. Finally, when I’d calmed down, a contented sigh came out of me.

“I know you have a lot of questions for us, Jill, but now is not the time to ask,” Miti said. “You need to eat. Luc, grab the soup you brought in.”

Luc, looking as though he had no idea what else to do, did what Miti said and held the soup bowl for me while I ate.

It wasn’t until I was almost done that I looked over at Miti to ask how she was, only to find she had started snoring.

“I do have a question I would like answered now,” I whispered to Luc.

His face softened, and he turned to put the empty soup bowl on the bedside table before facing me again. “Yes, what is it?”

I glanced at Miti. “How is she not more hurt?”

“The doctor they thought was Pac is now the doctor at Dad’s compound. He bandaged her up like new.”

I shook my head. “No, I mean how is she notmorehurt? I thought she would be in the hospital after what she did.”

He looked me up and down and said pointedly, “Well, how are you not more hurt and in the hospital?”

“Very true,” I laughed. “I just know she was a lot more . . . physical than I was. I thought she’d have broken bones and such.”

“She did.” After a pause, he added, “A wolf heals a lot faster than a human.”

I waited for him to say more, but Miti’s snoring was all we heard for the next minute. Images of Miti transforming flitted through my mind, but before I could follow my train of thought, Luc said, “It’s time to rest. Why don’t you take a nap, and I’ll bring you more food when you wake up?”

I smiled as he tucked me back into bed. “I could get used to this,” I confessed, feeling my eyes begin to feel heavy.

“I hope you do,” Luc whispered.

I heard him go to the other side of the bed and lift Miti up before exiting the room. Deciding that I’d take their advice on the rest, I closed my eyes and let my mind go blank. I could worry about what Luc had said another time.

Becca came by the next morning and showered me with chocolate and wine before crawling into bed with me and watching reruns of Friends.

“Luc told me that when he and the others went searching for me, Brandon went searching for you instead.”

“Yeah, he did.” Becca blushed, and I was happy to see her have that kind of reaction to Brandon’s chivalry. “He found me pretty quickly after I left. I was just wandering the streets, yelling your name. I was so frantic and scared for you, Jill. I was worried that you . . .” A sob came out of her, and I held her tight as we both cried.

“All is well. I’m good,” I reminded her.

“He wouldn’t let me keep looking for you. He told me the cavalry had set out to search for you, and they would do a much better job at finding you than me screaming at the top of my lungs going about without a clue as to where you were.”

She paused to take another sip of her wine before continuing, “He took me to his apartment and held me until we heard that Luc had found you. I started bawling. Oh, Jill.” She squeezed me tighter. “I don’t know what I’d do if you were gone forever.”

“I’m here, though. I’m right here.”

We didn’t say much else the rest of that morning, just munched on food and watched television. In the afternoon, Becca asked, “What happened last night? Are you okay to talk about it?”

I thought about how much I should share with her, but besides Miti’s transformation, which I still wasn’t sure was real, I didn’t want to tell Becca all the gory details. No one needed to live through that if they didn’t have to.
