She smiles at me. “Live a little, Amanda. It’ll be good for you.”

When she introduces herself to the gators, I don’t know what to do.

They all eye us like we’re prey, and they’re amused that she doesn’t seem to think they’re dangerous.

She sits down on the Alpha’s knee, and I rush away, getting my phone out to call her brother.

Those men are disgusting. They’re predators and they’re not going to just let Jillian walk away when she’s done flirting with them. They’re not like the random strangers she makes out with at the mall.

They’re adult men, with appetites to match.

Jake picks up his phone quickly.

“Hey Amanda, what’s up?”

“It’s Jillian. She’s flirting with these guys and I’m worried that it’s going to go too far. They’re dangerous, Jake.”

“Dangerous? Like they have guns, or …”

“They’re gators.”

“Shit,” he murmurs. “You guys went to the beach, right? I can come out there, but it’ll take a while. Can you stay away from them and maybe find someone who might help if she gets into trouble?”

“Yeah. I can see some guys from class. I don’t know them, but I’ll ask them to help if anything happens.”

He tells me he’s on his way, and he hangs up.

Looking back at Jillian I can tell she’s flirting like she does with cute guys she meets at the mall.

I get the creeps when I look at the gators. My friend has always wanted to get away from Fallen Pines, but she’s lost her mind with this whole gator thing.

That guy she’s flirting with is going to bite her.

I don’t know how I know that’s what’s coming, but it’s definitely going to happen.

I have no idea how hard it’ll be to get her away from them if they decide she belongs to them. Not that gators take mates, exactly. They’re a lot more independently minded than wolf shifters and they only form temporary congregations when it’s to their advantage. They don’t form families or packs.

And they definitely don’t mix with wolves unless they have ulterior motives.

I know if they bite Jillian, it’s because they’re marking her as prey.

Freya, I wish I had a potion on me.

Something defensive that I could use to knock those gators out.

One of them is getting up. He’s walking over to me.

Oh, Goddess, no.

I move quickly back to the car, ready to get the hell out of here if he gets too close.

It won’t help Jillian if we both get kidnapped by these awful men.

A thick hand clamps around my wrist and I turn quickly, pulling away. He tightens his grip and puts his other hand on my side. Panic swells inside me, making my throat tighten and my heart pound harder.

“Leave me alone,” I snap at him.

He looks me over with sleazy eyes. “You know you almost make me wish I could suffer a witch to live.”
