Page 6 of Old School Love

How did we let things get to this point? Drift so far apart that divorce seemed the only option?

No. I refuse to accept that. We promised each other forever. I intend to honor that vow.

More memories assail me. Our bodies entwined. Romantic weekends away, escaping the world. Building our home piece by piece over the years.

We’ve weathered so much as a couple. Illnesses, job changes, family drama. Always coming out stronger. I know we can do it again if we try.

I just have to make Maya remember how good we are together. Remind her of our passion, our intimacy. The way we know each other’s bodies so well.

My heart pounds thinking of holding her again. Feeling her skin against mine. Tasting those sweet lips.

No matter what it takes, this weekend I will fan the flames between us back to life. Because a love like ours doesn’t fade away. It’s too powerful, too all-consuming. We just need to nurture it again.

The exit for our small town nears. I grip the wheel tighter, filled with nervous energy. Time to put my words into action.

I pull into the parking lot, scanning for Maya’s car out of habit. My heart leaps when I spot it near the back. She’s here already.

I take a few deep breaths to steady my nerves before getting out. Gotta play this right if I want her back.

Walking inside, nostalgia washes over me. The gym looks almost identical to our senior year. Crepe paper streamers in the school colors. Folding tables lined with snacks and drinks. Even the same cheesy pop songs from back then are pumping through the speakers.

I weave through chatting classmates, not seeing the one face I seek. Where is she?

Finally, I spot Maya over by the photo booth, laughing with a group of friends. God, she’s more beautiful every time I see her.

I hang back for a minute, just watching her. The way her entire body takes part when she really laughs. How she flips her long dreadlocks over one shoulder. All those little gestures I know so well.

It’s time. I start towards her, pulse racing.Don’t screw this up, Cain.

“Maya?”

She turns, something I can’t read flashing through her gaze. I give a tentative smile.

“Axel. I wasn’t sure you’d come.”

“Of course. Wouldn’t miss it.” I shuffle my feet like a stupid teenager. “You look amazing.”

That tiny smile again. “Thanks.”

A beat passes. I clear my throat.

“Can we talk?”

* * *

My heart kicks into overdrive.

“You look beautiful,” I say, leaning in to kiss her cheek. She stiffens but doesn’t pull away.

“Axel.” Her tone is guarded, and I detect a hint of warning. “How have you been?”

“Good.” I glance around the room. “A lot of memories here, huh?”

Maya follows my gaze, a small but wistful smile playing on her full lips. “Yeah. It feels like nothing’s changed.”

“Some things have changed.” I brush a stray dread-lock behind her ear, feeling the softness of her skin. “We grew up.”

She steps back, folding her arms. “What do you want, Axel?”
