I miss you.Is it safe to call?

My heart skips. I glance at my closed bedroom door. Everyone’s gone to bed. I sincerely doubt anyone will come barging in, but I have to keep my voice down. I call his number, pressing the phone he gave me flush against my ear. Andrei answers after only one ring, probably as eager as I am to hear each other’s voices.

“You should be asleep, princess.”

I laugh softly, curling up on my side. “You’re one to talk,” I whisper with a smile.

“I’m really glad I got to see you today.”

“Me, too.”

“Did your bodyguard give you a hard time after? I hope he didn’t ask too many questions.”

“You don’t have to worry about Vance.”

“He’s very protective of you.”

“Yeah, they all are. He’s been working for my family for years. Practically watched me grow up.”

There’s a pause in our conversation, but it’s far from uncomfortable. The quiet between is calming, neither of us feeling the need to fill it with empty words.

“I want to see you,” he says after a moment.

“Right now?”

“Do you think you can sneak out?”

I snort. “Andrei, I think you’re forgetting who I am. I’m free to go where I please.”

“Without anyone knowing?”

I chew on the inside of my cheek. He unfortunately has a point. “Where would we even meet?”

“How about outside your window?”

His question is accompanied by two soft taps on the glass of my bedroom window. I jolt upright in bed, startled to find a shadowy figure hunched over just outside. Anyone else might have screamed, but I wasn’t afraid. In fact, I was beyond excited to see that familiar tuft of dark brown hair and the glint of Andrei’s dark eyes.

I throw my covers off and rush over, throwing open the window so he can more easily grasp the ledge.

“I feel like a damn teenager with all this sneaking around,” he confesses with a grin.

I grasp him by the shoulders so he doesn’t fall off the roof. “You say that like it’s a bad thing.” I take a look around. “How did you even get back up here? I had my guards fix the patrol gap. I’m surprised you didn’t alert the guard dogs.”

“I was really determined to see you.”

“You bribed them with treats, didn’t you.” I say it like a statement, not a question.

Andrei beams, his smile leaving me utterly breathless. “I’m officially their new best friend.”

I laugh softly, grinning so hard that it hurts my cheeks. “You really shouldn’t be here. I thought you said you were preparing for tomorrow.”

“My brothers are handling the prep. That’s one of the perks of being the boss, princess. I know how to delegate.” He reaches out and combs his fingers gingerly through my hair. “Besides, I…”

I press his palm to my cheek, closing my eyes as I soak in the warmth of his skin. “I know,” I whisper.

“Take a walk with me?” he asks.

Logic tells me it’s a bad idea. The current situation is too precarious. But I can’t seem to bring myself to say no.
