Glancing over my shoulder toward the burning truck, I thought of how close I’d come to killing us all.

I turned back to look at her.

She had scratches and scrapes against her face and hands, but she still gritted her teeth and stood. Kokou shuffled to where her gun was lying on the pavement and picked it up.

She was in pain, there was no denying that, but she simply moved back toward the burning vehicle. When she returned, she motioned for me to get into the truck.

As I drove by the inferno, Kokou was on the phone.

“Swede.” She was saying. “I’m going to need a cleanup. Yeah—I’ll call in later once I get cleaned up—No, I’m fine. I promise.”

She finished speaking and hung up.

Gritting her teeth, she exhaled slowly and twisted slightly in her seat.

“Okay, Kenny.” Her voice was free of pain and soft. “You can sit up now.”

CHAPTER3

Abeke “Kokou” Bolande

For the restof the ride back to the house, Kennedy had questions. Daniel tried answering them as best he could without scaring her. He explained the gunshots by saying it was the truck hitting something. Though to my adult brain it made no sense, Kennedy seemed to have accepted that answer and moved on to other questions.

She’d heard the explosion. But because I’d thought fast and had her stay down, Kennedy hadn’t witnessed anything that had happened.

Kennedy nodded. “Are you okay?”

She reached between the seats to tap my shoulder.

“I’m good.” I lied. “A little hurt, but not seriously.”

It didn’t make any sense telling her my entire body was in pain.

It would have worried her even more and we didn’t need that. As much as we could protect her from what was happening, I would do that.

Satisfied, she rested back in her seat, put her music on and turned to look out the window.

Daniel and I exchanged worried glances, but we said nothing.

Back at the home, Daniel showed me to the room I’d be using then quickly took Kenny so she could shower. While he attended to her, I stripped down to my pants and bra, then looked at my body in the mirror. My sides hurt but after feeling along it, I realized I was only banged up.

I hadn’t broken anything.

Though my right hip hurt, I knew that was from landing on the hood of the trunk then rolling off and hitting the ground on the same side. When I touched the spot, it hurt so bad I almost cried.

Once I cleaned up, I found a clean top in my bag and pulled it on, wincing the entire time.

I stretched out on my back on the bed, holding my breath, waiting for it to agitate my hip.

When no pain came, I exhaled, and the exhaustion began pulsing against my lower back.

I wasn’t sure how long I was in that position for before a soft knock sounded at the door. I didn’t sit up—I couldn’t.

Even thinking of moving hurt.

“Yeah?” I answered, taking slow, shallow breaths.

Daniel stuck his head in. “I wanted to check on you.”
