“They were looking for something.” I muttered more to myself than to him. “They were trying to get her to tell them something.”

“What could that be?”

“I don’t know.” I replied, standing. “Did you touch anything?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“I’m not an idiot, Kokou.” Daniel snapped. “The last thing I need is for my prints to be on anything in this house. I have enough to explain being here in the first fucking place—what a God damn mess.”

“Good.” I told him. “Let’s grab the guy tied up in the hall and clear out. This place will be crawling with cops soon enough.”

“You’re going to call them?”

I headed for the door, his footsteps heavy behind me.

He grabbed the half conscious man and dragged him out the backdoor, across an open lot then across the street. I lifted the cover on the bed of my truck, hefted the man in and slammed it shut.

“Can he breathe under there?” Daniel wanted to know.

“Unfortunately.”

Back in the front, I called Montana.

Things moved fast after that—we were barely out of the neighbourhood before a cop car zoomed by us going in the opposite direction.

The plan was to get Kujo and Reaper on their way to get our captive. I drove to meet up with them and after introducing Kujo to Daniel, the handover happened.

“I want to know why that teacher is dead.” I told them. “Anything you can find out.”

Kujo nodded. “We’re on it. You okay?”

“Just tired.”

Daniel excused himself and walked back toward the truck.

“What’s wrong with him?” Reaper asked.

“He’s had a long few hours.” I told them.

I knew it was because Daniel was angry they thought he couldn’t protect me. He didn’t have to speak it. Sighing, I patted Kujo’s shoulder.

“We’re gonna head back to the house so I can stretch out my hip.” I explained. “I jammed it a few days ago and after sitting down for as long as I had today—I’m already sore.”

“Listen, you know you can reach out of you need a relief, right?” Kujo asked.

“I know.” I smiled.

“As for your hip.” Kujo glanced toward where Daniel was then smirked at me. “I know a hockey player who would love to massage it for you.”

“What?” My cheeks heated. “Don’t say that.”

“You’re the only one who doesn’t see you as a beautiful woman.” Kujo leaned in and whispered. “Trust me, Daniel Archer is no fool.”

I scrunched my nose at him. “Go, be free.”

Reaper and Kujo laughed, and I jogged over to the truck and handed Daniel the key.
