Page 55 of Unleashing Kokou

In the end, I accepted.

The plan—we’d head back to the house, wash up, get some sleep then meet up with Montana and Swede—possibly Reaper and Kujo—first thing in the morning.

Over the past few years since I began working for Montana, I hadn’t met all his protectors. To me, Tate “Bear” Maddox was the man, the myth, the legend—I’d heard some good things, but hadn’t had the pleasure of making his acquaintance.

Bear was a beast of a man.

He was the sort of man that any woman would take pleasure in climbing like a tree.

When he peeled himself from the front of his truck, Bear didn’t seem to walk. Instead, he lumbered over to where we were standing, waiting to greet him.

When he stood in front of me, he towered above me, forcing me to look up into his eyes dimply lit by moonlight.

“It’s nice to finally meet you, Kokou.” Bear’s large paw engulfed my hand.

There was a slow drawl around the way he pronouncedKokou.

To greet Daniel, he merely offered a serious nod. I wasn’t sure if that was his usual way, or if it was because he knew of the history between Montana and Daniel.

Either way, I didn’t address it and to Daniel’s credit, he straightened his spine, folded his arms behind his back and returned the strained greeting.

Quickly, I gave him a rundown of who was in the house and a description of each. I explained to him about the front door and that they usually gained entry to the place through the right-side window.

Bear listened intently.

“Watch your back.” I told him. “They went out for weapons earlier.”

“Awesome.” Bear turned to glance over a large shoulder then back at me. “I’ll get settled.”

Once he moved his truck into position, I pulled my truck out and was on my way.

“You should take a nap.” I told Daniel. “We don’t know how much sleep we’ll get before we have to move again.”

“That goes against the road trip rules.” He muttered.

“What does that even mean?” I wanted to know.

He sighed dramatically. “When people are driving together, whoever is seated in the front seat must stay awake with the driver. It’s a well-known rule.”

“Um.” I glanced at him quickly then back at the road. “Then climb into the back.”

“That’s not the—I’m not going to sleep until we’re back at the house.”

“Suite yourself.”

Daniel was upset with me.

I was pretty sure it was because of the conversation we’d eavesdropped on earlier. I wasn’t entirely sure why he was in such a mood. It was as if he was the one on my radar. It wasn’t like the loss of those three people would be a drain on society.

Having them around was the issue—they were dishonest and cruel, and my type of evil was meant to destroy their kind.

Thanks to them, Daniel probably didn’t see me as a woman anymore. Hell, I figured he barely saw me as one before but at least there was some attraction there. Now, he saw me as a soldier—a woman capable of making grown men cry. He saw me as a woman who, at the mere mention of my name, grown men cowered in fear.

I never wanted him to see me that way—and the fact that Joshua, Roger and Anna changed his view of me angered me.

Losing my edge wasn’t the name of the game. It was keeping that edge but knowing when to soften and be the woman Daniel deserved.

I sighed.
