Page 60 of Unleashing Kokou

“Can Kenny stay with her god mother for a bit longer?” Kokou asked.

I nodded. “This is the last week of school anyway.”

“Good.” She replied.

I could see the wheels cranking through her head.

“Right now, we grab Anna and her gang.” Kokou spoke. “Then we find out what they know. Once we can corroborate what they tell us, and we can confirm who lives at that house in Columbus, we take the war to Cassandra’s doorstep. Sounds like a plan?”

“Sounds like a very good plan.” I leaned toward her. “Another kiss before we get the others?”

Kokou smiled, framed my cheeks and kissed me deeply.

“Let that hold you until we’re through this.”

We got the others and relayed our plans to them.

Montana called in Angel, Duke’s girl to watch over Kenny and her god mother while we put our plans in motion. Though we were sure they were fine, Kokou didn’t want to take any chances.

It was good to have that assurance.

It was the middle of the day and we figured we’d wait until dark before we hit the house. We wanted to hit it with a good chance all three of them were there. Kokou decided to nap in one of the back rooms and I sat on the front porch with a glass of Lemonade and a ham sandwich someone had shoved into my hand.

I wasn’t sure how long ago that had happened, but footsteps sounded behind me. I looked down and the ice cubes in the glass had melted. My sandwich had a nest of flies on it, and I just wasn’t hungry anymore.

Sighing, I looked up as Hank sat beside me but said nothing.

“I know, hurt her and I die.” I frowned. “Let’s just get that out of the way.”

“I wasn’t going to say that.” Montana’s voice was measured. “I think you know by now what would happen if you did hurt her. Kokou can take care of herself. She doesn’t need me to be her saviour.”

I swirled the glass around and lifted it to my lips for a long drink.

“I didn’t expect anything to happen between us.” I spoke up. “It’s been so long since I’d been with anyone, I’d stopped looking. I decided to focus on my daughter and my career.”

“You don’t have to explain anything to me.”

“But I want to.” I admitted.

“Kokou is a beautiful woman, Daniel.” Montana told me. “You’d be a fool not to see that. But it takes a special kind of man to look beyond the female Rambo to the actual sweet, kind, fiercely loyal woman underneath. You saw that.”

I hung my head.

“Look, some men look at her and they see a woman who they think want to be a man.” Montana confided. “I can’t tell you how many men ran when they realize what she’s capable of. But they don’t understand that as long as they treat her right, they had nothing to fear. You get that, right?”

“Now I do.” I cleared my throat. “I’m not going to lie to you and tell you it didn’t worry me at first. When I heard the way Anna, and her goons were talking—my panties were in a twist.”

Montana laughed softly. “I’m not saying you should be okay with all of it right away. But she’s had to learn from an early age that there’s no such thing as Prince Charming. That some guy on a white horse isn’t going to roll up and save her.”

“That’s not entirely true, is it?” I asked, shifting to look at him. “She has you—this entire team. You should have seen the way Bear looked at me when we met. He only knew of her by name, and he still wanted to kick my ass.”

Montana laughed. “Bear’s issue with you is for something entirely different. But he’s a good guy.”

“I know you and I have not always been on the best terms.” I pointed out. “You have no reason to trust that this thing between Kokou and I will end well for her.”

“You’re an adult, Daniel.” Hank pointed out. “If you’re still down for those stupid games from when we were kids, then you know where the door is. Because if you hurt my friend, I will level you.”

I straightened my spine and moaned at the feeling of stretching. “Do you know how good it feels to have someone want you with no strings attached? Do you have any idea how long it’s been since my daughter connected with someone—anyone other than those in our world? Do you have any idea how it feels to have a woman look at you and all you can do is melt?”
