This man put my life in danger—put Reaper’s life in danger.
No—I would not be the reason Reaper’s wife never saw him again.
As Reaper tried moving away from Roger, the young man caught his arm. I stepped forward as Reaper fell to his knees beside Roger and I watched as he tried saying something to Reaper.
“Don’t—” Roger coughed.
Blood splashed from his mouth.
“His lungs are filling up with blood.” Reaper explained.
“Don’t—leave—me.” Roger pleaded. “I don’t—don’t wanna die alone.”
My heart broke.
I could see his face now and he couldn’t be more than twenty. I wondered how he’d gotten mixed up with Anna and Joshua who were old enough to know better. Anna was African American, and I wondered if he was related to Joshua in some way.
Maybe it was the lure of the money.
“I’m…” Roger coughed. “Sorry.”
I turned and walked off down the hall. Reaper followed but I didn’t stop. My stomach turned and I had to hold my breath to keep from throwing up.
“Where’s Kokou?” Reaper asked.
Before I could answer, a loudboomechoed through the night.
Gunshot.
Seconds later, another sonic boom tore through the darkness.
My heart did a painful flip as I took off running in the direction the sound came from.
“Daniel, wait!” Reaper called. “It may not be safe.”
But I didn’t care. I needed to find out what happened.
I skidded to a stop. The dark wasn’t helping me trying to find my heart. I could barely breathe as I looked around.
“Kokou!” I screamed. “Kokou!”
“You go—”
Reaper stopped and I turned to see what had left him speechless. Kokou staggered out of the slight ditch where we’d parked before. She was panting heavily.
I took two steps toward her.
“Daniel.”
She slumped to her knees then toppled over to her side. Without thinking, I ran to her and rolled her to her back.
“Baby?” I called, shaking her. “Open your eyes.”
When she didn’t, I tapped her cheek.
She was bleeding from somewhere—I couldn’t tell where.
Her top was soaked.
