Page 68 of Unleashing Kokou

Shrugging away, I glared at the cop.

“I don’t mind her getting a doctor.” I ignored Hank. “But I do mind she’s getting one here.”

“This was the closest hospital.” The cop explained. “I’m sorry. We’ll keep someone on her.”

“How badly is she hurt?” I asked.

“Bullet to the arm.” He replied. “She’ll live.”

It was then I realized what Kokou meant that she’d wanted to be different for me. I knew she wouldn’t have taken any pity on Anna—shooting her in the arm hadn’t been a mistake. She’d done it because I’d gotten my back up about what she was capable of.

“Shit.” I covered my face.

“Percy, I want you to handle her arrest.” Swede spoke to the cop. “The detective working the attempted kidnapping case is useless—”

“Understatement.” I muttered. “All but accused me of trying to kidnap my own daughter and murder her teacher to cover it up.”

Percy arched a brow. “Say what?”

“Trust me.” I shrugged. “I can’t make this shit up.”

“I can pull some strings.” Percy assured us. “Gimme a few days. In the meantime, I’ll have someone keep an eye on Anna—make sure when she leaves here, she goes straight to jail.”

“We appreciate that.” Hank told Percy.

Soon afterward, the doctor came out. He looked exhausted but I was too focused on finding out about Kokou than anything else.

“She lost a lot of blood.” The doctor explained. “But she will be fine. They’ll be moving her to recovery soon.”

“Can we see her?” I wanted to know.

“What’s your relationship to Ms. Bolande?”

“Um—” I looked at the others.

“He’s her boyfriend.” Hank replied.

My cheeks flushed. “I’m her boyfriend. These are veterans she served with.”

“She’s still out of it and might just sleep all night.” He nodded. “You can stay the night with her if you wish. The others can go in and see her but keep it short.”

I was pretty sure that wasn’t the rule about me staying. The look on his face told me he was cutting us a break. Though I wanted to rush in to see her, I stood back and allowed the others to take turns visiting with her once they told us we could.

“Come with me.” Hank said, leading me back into the men’s room. “The gun, give it to me.”

I handed it over.

He checked then shoved it into the back of his pants after removing his gun and giving it to me.

“Wait, you’re leaving me here to protect Kokou?”

I panicked.

“I couldn’t take care of her before. I can’t—”

“Listen to me.” Hank gripped my shoulders. “Listen carefully. Someone getting hurt is a part of war. It sucks—I can’t tell you how many times we have missions go sideways on us. You can’t plan for ever eventuality. No one blames you for this. But my guys are running fumes right now.”

“You didn’t really trust me with her before…”
