Two days later,we picked Kennedy up, stopped to get groceries then brought her back to the house. She chatted the entire time about little Tristan, Nova and Reaper’s two year old, as well as their Border Collie Sifa.

At the house, Daniel talked her into a nap and that when she woke, he would go swimming with her. While he worked on something in his office, the protectors descended on the house—Swede, Montana, Bear and Kujo with his dog, Six. I thought they would have brought their wives, but apparently, the women were out together.

“You know she won’t ever talk to you again if you brought this dog here and leave before she wakes up.” Daniel laughed.

“I’m aware.” Kujo chortled. “Okay, Six. Find the girl.”

Six barked, sniffed the ground in a circle then darted up the stairs.

“Wait—” Daniel’s eyes widened. “He can do that?”

Kujo smirked. “Just you wait.”

We all stood silently, waiting.

Soon a happy squeal sounded up the stairs, followed by a happy bark then footsteps thundering down the stairs.

“It’s a puppy!” Kennedy flailed as she went down on her knees to hug the dog’s neck.

Six gave her kisses eliciting giggles from the six year old.

I smirked. “You know you’re going to have to get her a puppy now, right?”

Daniel groaned.

We sat around on the back deck talking—mostly discussing what we were going to do about Cassandra. With Justin and Roger dead and Anna in prison, she is the only loose end left to tie up. I kept my eyes on Daniel, watching his reaction to her name, to the thought of her.

A part of me wanted a clue to tell me he still wanted her, that he still loved her. It had been some years since he hadn’t been with her, love was a strange thing.

Eventually, we settled on a plan.

Daniel and I would pay the Marley family a visit.

Once that was done, the grill came out, and while I was set to sit and enjoy, Swede took over the meats, Bear took over babysitting duties in the pool with Kennedy. She was laughing and having the time of her life as Bear tossed her up and having her land with a splash in the pool.

“This little girl is now surrounded by an army.” Montana pointed out.

“Even if her father is an ass?” Daniel asked.

“Hey, that’s not Kenny’s fault.” Reaper teased.

We laughed.

The next time the doorbell rang, I tried getting up to answer it. One look from Montana had me falling back into my chair.

I pouted.

“I’ll get it!” Kenny cheered and darted in through the back door.

My heart did a strange twist and I pushed to my feet again, reaching behind me.

Kujo must have noticed what was happening because rested a comforting hand on Daniel’s arm.

“Six.” Kujo called.

The dog’s ears perked up.

“Go.” He told the dog.
