WASP

It was barely five in the morning and already I was at the depot.

On my way in, I’d stopped at a Tim Hortons to get the largest coffee they had to sip on and filled my thermos to take on the road.

Since I wasn’t a fan of eating too early, I skipped food and arrived in time to pull my truck out of its bay for the guys to add the trailer to the back.

I couldn’t remember what I would he hauling this time, and at some points I thought I didn’t much care.

As long as it wasn’t anything illegal, I’d get it to where it needed to be—hopefully, on time.

It took the men an hour to finish loading my rig and after I gathered all my paperwork, I was putting them in the small safe in the bed of my truck when an engine caught my attention.

I didn’t have to check to see who it was.

Instead, I locked the safe, shoved it under the back end of the passenger seat then jumped down and slammed the door.

“Wasp!”

Turning, I caught Levi Franklin against my chest for a hug.

It was good to see him.

I framed his cheeks, kissed his forehead then stepped back to lean against the truck.

“You really didn’t have to wake up this early.” I told him. “I know you performed last night and probably didn’t get home until late.”

“And miss you leave for a run?” Levi asked. Pulling out a muffin and breaking it in half. “I don’t want you to ever leave and I don’t see you. I know it’s my childhood trauma speaking, but I don’t care. I need the hug—I mean, it gets me through the time you’re away, okay?”

I caressed his cheek.

“Okay.” I caved.

“Take it.” Levi told me. “I know you haven’t eaten breakfast yet because you’re weird.”

Giggling, I accepted the treat he offered me. I bit into it to keep from speaking because I knew my voice would crack.

As I chewed, I glanced over at him—he wasn’t wearing any makeup, which wasn’t at all like him. Even if it was a little foundation, he would have slipped some on—I guess he was in a rush.

“Do you have everything?” Levi asked, handing me a small bag of candy.

I nodded.

“I have everything.” I promised.

“Thermos has coffee?”

“Filled and ready to go.”

Levi nodded, sighed and looked up at the sky.

“You gonna be okay?” I wanted to know.

Levi scrunched his nose at me but grinned before hugging me tightly. I couldn’t remember a run where he wasn’t at the depot to see me off.

Sometimes, he had to call in sick at work, but every roll-out, he was there.
