He darted off as if he thought I was going to change my mind.

Groaning in exhaustion, I closed the door.

While I was tired, I couldn’t pretend I wasn’t excited about the concept of being in the same room as Carter Finch.

I knew there wasn’t a planet where I was his type or deserved him. But the moments I could spend in his presence, listening to his voice, feeling his hot breath against me—I’d take it.

After my shower, I dressed in a pair of black jeans and an oversize shirt that fell down one shoulder. Deodorant and perfume later, I stood in front of the bathroom mirror, looking at myself.

My mother’s flat nose and my father’s almost wild eyes stared back at me.

I tried not to think of my family.

They were alive—they just didn’t want me.

But I wouldn’t let that thought mar the moment I was looking forward to.

There were very few happy, calm moments in my life, and I was hoping having breakfast with Dillon, Eli and Carter would be one of those.

By the time I arrived at the main house, Carter and his boys had already set out the food. All I had to do was accept the chair Eli pulled out for me.

“Thank you.” I tapped his cheek, gently.

“You’re welcome.” Eli replied.

We ate—almost like a real family.

But all through that time I knew Carter was staring at me. There was just something about the way his eyes traversed my body that left me feeling wonderfully warmed and overly happy.

A few times I’d look at me, but the shyness in me wouldn’t let me hold his gaze for long periods of time.

The last time he winked at me.

I swore I came.

Hanging my head, I sipped what was left of my coffee and tried holding my breath to calm my body.

This is too much.

With breakfast out of the way, the boys went off to play videogames and I walked with Carter into his office. It was probably a bad idea to be alone with him, but I found myself closing the office door before sitting in one of his chairs.

“Tex found out some information about our guy from last night.” Carter told me as he packed his laptop into his bag. “He’s going to call through after my meeting with Charlie. Look, I know you’re off today—”

“I can handle two teenagers.” I promised him. “Besides, they seemed more preoccupied with each other than with the rest of us.”

“Right!” Carter laughed. “Okay, they should be fine. But if anything, you have my number—we have a driver on standby if they need to go anywhere and if you—”

“Carter.” I called to him softly. “Go.”

He turned to stare at me, and I melted under the heat of his stare.

“I won’t get another moment like that with you, will I?” He asked.

“You sound disappointed.”

“I am.” Carter picked up his bag and turned for the door.

Surging from the chair I caught his arm. When he looked at me, I pushed to my tip-toe and placed a chaste kiss on his lips.
