I was almost back on the highway when something caught my attention.

The sun glinted off the back mirror of an SUV with tinted windows. Four men were there trying to force a fifth into the vehicle.

I didn’t have to be a genius to work out what was happening.

Without second guessing, I glanced around me, checking my mirrors before honking and swerving my rig into the lane behind the SUV. When the men glanced toward me, they didn’t move and I honked again but didn’t slow down.

When they realized I wasn’t about to stop, they released their captive who dove out of the way, scrambled to his feet and started running alongside my truck. I slammed into the back of the SUV, pushing it along the street as I started slowing.

Since the rig was packed, it took a lot longer to stop. When it did, I leaned over the side, shoved opened the passenger door and glanced back at the other two men.

“Get in!” I ordered the man.

He gripped the handle and hoisted himself in.

Gunshots ricochet off one of my mirrors and I frowned.

“Idiots!” I screamed. “This runs on gasoline that explodes, you know!”

I shoved my truck into gear and took off again, easing the wrecked SUV out of the way and driving around it. The men chased after us, firing but soon the distance between us was too great and I watched as they became smaller and smaller in my mirror.

“You just pulled off a highway rescue in an eighteen-wheeler.” Were his first words to me. “I’m not complaining but that was dangerous.”

“It’s only dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing.” I replied. “And I know what I’m doing.”

“Right.” He laughed softly. “Carter Finch. Thank you.”

“Seema Lipson.” I replied without looking at him. “Where can I take you?”

“There’s a truck stop about twenty minutes from here.” Carter replied. “You can leave me there. I’ll call someone to come get me.”

“I’ll stop with you.” I told him. “I’m in need of a washroom break and some more coffee anyway.”

“You’ve already done so much for me.”

I glanced at him then, his green eyes were on me like a warm caress.

Exhaling, I returned my eyes to the road.

“Like I said, my bladder needs help and I need fuel.”

“Sure.”

From time to time, I checked as if I expected to find those men behind me.

I’d wrecked their vehicle, so it would be a while before they were on the road and was able to chase anyone.

And while I was curious about what was happening there, I had a feeling I didn’t want to know.

I already stuck my nose in by helping Carter get away from them. I’d just drop him off, wait for his people to show up, then be on my way.

“Maybe you can call them, so the wait won’t be long.”

“I would, but those assholes back there took my phone.” He sighed. “Forgive the language. But it’s been a hell of a morning.”

“I’m not a shrinking violet, Mr. Finch.” I assured him. “I promise you I cuss more than you do.”

He laughed.
