I trembled and leaned forward to rest my forehead against his chest. He wrapped an arm around me to gently caress my neck.

“This isn’t how it’s supposed to go.” I told him. “I’m supposed to help you protect your son then go on my merry way. How did we get here?”

“I don’t know.” I replied. “But I don’t mind it. My first instinct was to fight it. To do what society says is proper. But I’ve fought for some stupid relationships before. None of them at the beginning felt like this. So, if all of those felt how they had and imploded badly, why shouldn’t I give this a try?”

I lifted my head. “Relationship?”

“Damn—I went too far, didn’t I?”

I shook my head and sat up.

“I just—don’t label it yet, okay?” I asked. “Let’s get through this whole thing—then we can revisit?”

“Fair.” Carter nodded and kissed me.

“Get some rest.” He stood. “I know I was a little rough with you and—well, yeah.”

I giggled.

“Fine.” I nodded. “Go to bed—I’ll be okay.”

He kissed me, tenderly, almost like a lover telling me goodbye.

The sadness in that kiss tried breaking through but I was able to hold onto the tears until after he was gone. While I was happy, and my body pulsed wonderfully, I couldn’t get over that kiss.

That one kissed that had tattooed something on my heart.

I didn’t sleep all night.

Having Carter make love to me stayed on my mind, replaying.

The next day before anyone was up, I snuck away from the property to have coffee with Levi. He smiled when he saw me and only reached over to poke the love-bite at my neck then the other at the swells of my breasts.

“Damn—Carter McHottie is not a gentle lover.” He teased.

I flushed and covered my cheeks.

“I’m right?” Levi chortled. “Omg! You got your back blown out! Woohoo! About damn time!”

“Stop this.” I giggled. “Really.”

“Listen, at least one of us should be getting laid on the regular.” He sighed dramatically.

“I’m sorry about Travis.” I told him while holding his hand atop the table. “What happened?”

“Remember I told you he asked for a break?”

I nodded, paused to accept our coffee and sandwiches then leaned forward for him to continue explaining.

When he was finished my eyes were widened.

“Wait—Carter?” I blinked. “As in Carter Finch, pretended to be your boyfriend to make your ex jealous?”

Levi nodded.

“I know, right?” Levi chuckled. “Seriously, he really helped me out. And besides, he was right.”

“Right? About what?”
