I looked up and he turned to face the man rushing toward us. He was handsome, chiseled face, dark brown hair and dressed in all black.

“What the hell?” He wanted to know. “What happened? This is nowhere near the office.”

“This is Seema Lipson.” Carter stood and motioned toward me. “Seema, this is the friend I’ve gained because I didn’t read the fine print.”

The man extended a hand to me, and I stood, wiped my palm against my jean-clad thigh and accepted.

“Best friend?” I asked.

He nodded with a grin. “Yeah—only because I have to. Charlie Dansig. I hope he had manners. He sometimes forgets.”

“I was the perfect gentleman.” Carter announced.

“Ms. Lipson?”

“Seema, please.” I chuckled at their lovely back and forth. “And yes, he was the perfect gentleman. Even paid for my coffee.”

“Good. So, what happened?”

We sat at the table for Carter to explain what happened. I didn’t want to overstay my welcome. I quickly finished my coffee and wrapped up the rest of my sandwich.

“I’ve fallen behind.” I told them. “I need to get back on the road.”

“Too bad.” Charlie pouted. “I’m sorry we set you back.”

“It’s no problem.”

“Let me walk you to your rig?” Carter was already up before I could speak.

For some reason, I wanted to be in his presence longer. I knew the moment I climbed back into that truck, I’d never see him again. I’d never have those gorgeous eyes on me, or hear the deep, soft baritone of his voice.

Sighing, I nodded and bowed my head in Charlie’s direction.

“It was lovely meeting you, Seema.” Charlie told me. “I’m sorry it was under such circumstances.”

Offering him a smile, I allowed Carter to escort me through the door with a gentle hand at the small of my back.

He said nothing until we were at my truck, and I was opening the door.

“I don’t want to offend you, Seema,” he said. “But there must be something I can do to repay your kindness. You can’t understand what you’ve done for me.”

I shook my head.

“You can be more careful.” I told him. “I don’t know what you’re into, or not into—but those men looked dangerous, and they were armed. Until you know what that was about, you probably should get someone to be with you.”

“As in bodyguards?”

I nodded.

“I have an idea.”

I rested my hands on my hips. “Oh?”

“Could you guard my body, Seema?” He asked.

My cheeks flushed.

Of course, he wasn’t hitting on me.
