“Yeah—Sevlin Jessop.” Seam gasped. “What’s he doing there?”

“Hovering for his money most likely.” I replied.

Wolf and Myra entered the house then and I quickly filled them in.

We all sat around, watching the screen to see that though Selvin had been parked for a while, no one exited the car. From time to time, the window would roll down and they’d toss something out—probably a lit cigarette butt.

“She’s in danger.” I spoke up finally. “She wanted to get me so badly that she was willing to risk ripping off mercenaries who’s going to kill her.”

“Maybe they won’t.” Myra entered the room and handed Wolf a glass of something. “She owes them.”

“You don’t understand, darling.” Wolf wrapped his arm around her hips and brought her down into his lap. “Sure, she owes them money. But sometimes, they run of patience. It’s coming up to the point where she’s worth more to them dead than alive.”

“I don’t follow,” Myra said.

“The Tide is well known in the underworld as being ruthless.” Seema explained. “They are known to be able to not only do their jobs, but people are too scared to rip them off. You pay what you owe, or you’re never heard from again.”

“What you’re telling me is.” Myra paused to look around. “That in order to keep their reputation, they will kill her?”

We all remained silent.

“Well, shit.” Myra sank deeper into her husband’s arms.

“What do you want to do?” Tex asked. “This is your show, Carter. We’re just visitors here.”

I glanced over at Seema to see the bottom had fallen out of her world and it was my fault.

“Keep an eye on Selvin and her.” I stood. “I need to have a private word with Seema.”

“Me?” She pointed to herself. “This is your call. I’ll do—”

“Goddess.” I extended a hand to her.

Though she looked around the room at the others and seemed very confused as to what was happening, she accepted my hand. I drew her to her feet, then escorted her from the house and into the backyard.

“You don’t want me anywhere near Audrey.” I finally spoke after we were sitting on the steps leading down from the pool. “I can see it every time something happens that might bring me in contact with her. Tell me what you’re thinking.”

Seema dragged her palms along her thighs, and for a moment, she didn’t speak.

“I’m thinking—”

Her voice cracked.

She paused then tried again.

“I’m thinking at some point in your life there was something about her you found irresistible.” She didn’t look at me. “There was something about her that you fell in love with—something that moved you. I’m thinking her body turned you on and at nights when you held her, she felt safe with you.”

“Goddess.”

“You have history.” Seema continued. “And just because I helped you once doesn’t mean you’ll forget that.”

“Goddess, what are—”

“I’m saying if you feel you can forgive her and—shit.” She got up and tried walking away.

I caught her and pulled her backward into my chest.

“You’re thinking if I can forgive her and want her back—yes?”
