Dillon blushed.

There it is.

“But I’m going to need you to spend some time with me, okay?”

“Sure, dad.”

I tapped his shoulder. “Eat your food.”

By the time he was showered and dressed, I was ready. I tossed him the keys for my Bentley and took his backpack from him.

Since he had his learner’s permit, I allowed him to drive to school with me in the passenger seat from time to time. This morning, we stopped to get Eli and when we were finally at school, he walked off with his friend.

Suddenly, he stopped, ran back to hug me then darted off again.

“They grow up fast, don’t they?” One of the mothers called to me.

“They sure do.” I replied. “You have a good day.”

“You too!”

Back on the road, I stopped to get groceries, ensuring I had his favourite cereal and a little extra for the sleepover he would be having with Eli at the house the coming weekend. And while I didn’t go to the office, I called Charlie to come over.

At home, I put away the groceries and video called a friend of mine who could help me try to put a plan in motion to find out what was happening in my life.

“We need to stop meeting like this.” John “Tex” Keegan drawled. “People will talk.”

I laughed as his girl Melody stuck her head in to see who Tex was talking to.

“Hey Carter!” She waved.

“Hello, beautiful.” I greeted her. “I still say you can do so much better.”

“Truth.” She giggled. “But he’s grown on me.”

Tex laughed out loud. “That’s what you get for not reading the fine print.”

She crinkled her nose at us. “You two have fun today. And try not to cause any extinction events.”

“I promise nothing.” Tex wiggled his brows at her.

Melody groaned, kissed him and wandered off.

When Tex focused on me, he tilted his head and sighed.

“Okay,” he said. “What happened?”

“Someone tried grabbing me a few days ago.” I explained. “I was driving on the highway, they rammed me from behind—I flipped.”

“How’d you get out of that?”

“You won’t believe this.” I laughed softly, grabbed a soda and wandered into my office. “This Goddess driving an eighteen-wheeler performed this John-Wick-meets-James-Bond trick to get me to safety.”

“Goddess?” Tex leaned forward. “Does this Goddess have a name?”

“Seema Lipson.” I replied. “But that’s not why I’m calling. I’m calling to see if you have anyone to watch over my kid while I figure out what the hell is happening.”

“You think they may go after Dillon?”
