“Well, I was kind of hoping you’d stick around.” Dillon explained, shyly picking at the corners of his fingers. “Because I get it—I’m not your son. But I was kind of hoping you’d want the job.”

For a moment, I stared at him, not wanting to make any assumptions about what he meant.

“The job?”

“I know I keep telling dad that I’m not a kid.” Dillon leaned his back to the island to face me. “But I’m only sixteen. So, I still kind of need someone to take care of me—outside of dad, that is.”

“You have Eli.”

He blushed.

“That’s not what I mean—” He shook his wrists nervously. “I was hoping since you were with dad, you’d want to take care of me too.”

I smiled, took the two steps to pull him into a hug.

“I thought that goes without saying.” I told him. “You kinda come with the package, you know?”

Dillon laughed.

“I do?” He asked.

“Yeah.” I answered. “Your father has made thatveryclear. He loves you and he won’t ever be with a woman if she doesn’t want you. You understand?”

“So—” He rested his chin against the center of my forehead. “You’re in?”

“I’m in.”

“Even if I can be a teenage jerk sometimes?”

“Even if you’re a teenage jerk sometimes.” I chuckled. “Just remember, I can take you.”

Dillon laughed out loud.

“Yes, ma’am.” He hugged me tighter. “So—what do I call you? I can’t keep calling you Seema or Wasp.”

“Well.” I released him and pushed up to sit on the island. “For now, how about you just call me Wasp? Then when you’re more comfortable, you can call me whatever you’d like.”

“I can work with that.”

It was two days later when the weather cleared up and Charlie brought Eli up to pick up Dillon. When they were gone, I was in the kitchen making us something to eat when I felt Carter’s presence.

I pretended I didn’t know he was there until I couldn’t take it anymore.

“What is it?” I asked as I tasted the rice, testing its softness.

“It’s been a while since we’ve been alone.” Carter told me. “I’m not sure how to bring this up without sounding like an asshole.”

“You’re horny.”

Carter choked on air.

I glanced at him over a shoulder, and chuckled.

“You’re a man, Carter.” I reminded him. “I can read your mind.

He sighed and hung his head.

Adding a little more water to the rice, I turned the stove down to low before checking the chicken stew before walking over to stand in front of him. Shoving my fingers in the back pockets of my jeans and stared up into his eyes.
