Because she was right. Annie was hiding something.

I pushed the thought out of my head and walked back over to Annie with a pack of frozen peas in hand. “Good thing that you convinced me to pick these up,” I said. “They are going to come in handy.”

“I’m basically psychic,” she said.

I reached out and undid the strap of her heel. We would have to bring these back at some other time. I enjoyed the way that they made her legs look. Annie hissed as my fingers gingerly touched her ankle. “Maybe we should get you to a doctor?” I asked.

Annie shook her head. “It’s probably a light sprain. I don’t need to pay for a doctor to tell me that there’s nothing that they can do except have me stay off of it.”

She didn’t want to get a hospital bill. I didn’t think too much about what it meant that Annie didn’t have a job, and now, those things were starting to slap me in the face. Annie might be hiding something, but she hadn’t been the one to pursue me. I’d gone after her, full force.

Sighing, I pressed the peas to her ankle.

“What’s wrong?” Annie asked. When our eyes met, she was staring at me with such intensity that it took me back slightly.

“What makes you think something is wrong?” I asked.

Her lips thinned. “Because you haven’t talked to me for a week, and you look like there’s something that you are dying to say to me but too scared to voice.”

I felt my defenses starting to lock in place. “What the hell would I be scared of?” I snapped. “I’m the one in control of this situation.”

The look of shock on Annie’s face made my stomach turn. She looked as though I’d slapped her, and her bottom lip trembled slightly.

“Fuck,” I muttered, running a hand through my hair. “I’m sorry.”

Annie looked away. “It’s fine.”

I shook my head. “No,” I told her. “It’s not.” I felt bad the moment the words left my lips. “My mother puts me on edge.”

Annie nodded sagely. “I got that.”

“That was a tame night.”

Annie laughed a little, but I could hear the discomfort in it. She wouldn’t say anything, but I could tell that she didn’t like the way that I’d talked to her.

I sat down heavily on the edge of the couch. “My mother made it clear that she is no longer going to allow the family to finance my campaign.” Saying the words aloud still stung. My feelings towards my mother aside, I didn’t think that she would be the largest obstacle I faced while trying to win the mayoral ship.

“What?” Annie asked, jerking upright, so that the peas slid off of her ankle. “What does that mean?”

“It means that I’m going to have to figure out some donors.”

I didn’t tell Annie the rest. I did not wake up this morning knowing what to do, but the moment I had Annie in my arms, the decision was made for me. I had never allowed my mother to dictate my life, and I wasn’t going to start now. Annie had agreed to help me, and I couldn’t abandon her when she hadn’t abandoned me.

“That’s terrible!”

I shrugged slightly. I hadn’t thought too much about it considering that until about thirty minutes ago, I hadn’t been sure of which way I was going to go with this.

“It’s fine,” I told her. “I’ll figure it out.”

For a moment, there was a tenseness between the two of us, and I knew Annie was trying to figure out what all of this meant.

I could see the worry in her eyes, and the way that she nibbled on the side of her lip. “Everything is going to be fine,” I told her, reaching out to cup her cheek. Her skin was smooth and soft, and I couldn’t help but run my thumb over the corner of her mouth.

“I know that you don’t want to rely on people for money,” she whispered.

Normally, I kept my distance from Annie. Outside of the first night we kissed, and a few innocent pecks here and there, I’d respected her no sex rule. Though I thought about fucking her senseless every minute of the day.

Annie bit her lip again, and I released a soft groan. “You need to stop that,” I commanded. Despite the seriousness of our talk, I could feel all the blood in my body rushing directly to my cock.
