Max sits with his arm around Willow. Trevor’s hand is on Mia’s thigh. Here I sit, pining away for the woman that tore my heart out. The only thing I can think about is marching up those stairs and kissing her until she’s out of breath.

“We’re going to go talk to her,” Mia says.

I glance at her, “Is that wise?”

She giggles, “We can’t do any worse than you have. Both Will and I know what she’s been through, although different experiences. We understand what she’s feeling right now. It might help her to know she’s not alone and will get through this.”

I drag a hand down my face, “Fine. If she asks you to leave, you go. Don’t make this worse than it already is.”

Mia stands, placing her hands on her hips, “She won’t. Haven’t you heard? I’m a fucking ray of pitch-black sunshine.”

Arching an eyebrow, I smirk at her, “I’m pretty sure that’s not even a thing.”

She grabs Willow's hand and throws over her shoulder, “Oh it is. Ask Trev.”

I can’t help but watch Mia bounce up the stairs with Willow. I’ve known her for a long time because we’ve worked together a lot. But she’s different now. Happy. I can only hope one day Jade will have the same glow that Mia has.

Rising off the couch, I go into the kitchen to make myself a drink. I also grab one for Max and Trevor.

When I return to hand them their drinks, they are deep in conversation. I hand them their glasses and sit back down.

Max glances at me with a concerned expression, “What do we know?”

Shaking my head, I say, “No. I’m not going to betray her by telling her story. It’s not mine to tell.”

Trevor arches an eyebrow, “Hey dickhead. I know you. I know someone is going to die for hurting her. If you think for one second, you’re going at it alone, you’re dead fucking wrong.”

Max clenches his fist while downing his drink with the other hand, “I trained you better than this. We never go alone when it’s personal.”

I sit on the sofa with my right leg crossed over my left, sipping my drink with one hand running my other hand down my face. I’m stressed. I don’t want to fucking do anything that’ll push her further away, yet I know both of them are right. There’s a reason we don’t go alone when emotions are involved. I’m known as a robot with no emotions. When it comes to Jade, that’s not true at all. She rips every feeling I have out of my chest and makes me wear it on the outside for the world to see. I fucking hate it. And I fucking love it. I should be over her. It’s been years. Yet the second her eyes connected with mine in that fucking basement, every feeling for her I’d long pushed down came rushing back. She’s the ocean rushing over me, and I’m the asshole that’s going to stand there drowning. If I were a smart man, I’d cut my losses. Help her and move the fuck on. But I’m not a smart man. I’m an obsessed man.

After finally giving in and telling them everything she told me, Max sighs.

“So both of them?”

I nod, “She may hate me for killing her father. I don’t honestly know but he chose himself over her. What kind of father does that?”

Max chuckles, “Yeah, that was a bit of a roadblock for Willow and me, but we got through it. She was far from pleased that I killed her father, but eventually, she understood. She won't understand. She’s more like Willow than Mia, I think.”

I gulp the rest of my drink, the ice hitting my teeth, before setting the glass back on my leg, “She used to be, but I’m honestly not sure who she is anymore.”

I get up to refill my glass and freeze near the stairs when I hear a sound I have not heard in years.

“She’s fucking giggling.”

I don’t realize I’ve said it out loud until Trevor is beside me with his hand on my shoulder, “Yes, she is,” he says, “This is what she needs. Jade needs to know she isn’t alone. And our women can help pull her back into the light.”

“I want to be the one to give her that. I want to be the one to make her laugh, but she won’t let me get close enough.”

He sighs, “She’s a baby deer with shaky legs, learning how to walk again, trapped in the headlights. Your girl is terrified. And pissed. Wouldn’t you be? Give her time. Let her figure out how to walk before you make her run. She’ll get there on her time, not yours.”

I whip my head around to look at him, “When the fuck did you get so insightful.”

He sighs a sigh of contentment, “It’s all Mia man. All fucking her. She changed me from the inside out.”

Glaring at him, I say, “Gross. You sound like a pussy. Are you going to try to suck my dick now?”

He chuckles, “It’d be the best blow job of your life.”
