“Stay where you are Willow. We are on our way.”

I can hear her sobbing as he pulls the phone from his ear and disconnects the call.

“Let’s go,” Max says.

We race out of the safe house and pile into the vehicle, Max and I in the front, Mia and Trevor in the back, and drive to the restaurant.

“We’ll find her,” Max says as he pulls out of the driveway.

I clench my fists, “In what fucking condition, man? Alive? Dead?”

Punching the dash, I growl, “Did you know they were leaving?”

He glares at me, “No. Of course, I didn’t. I would’ve told Willow no. She doesn’t get many details on our business dealings anymore. My wife can’t handle the violence. She, of course, knew what Jade had been through. But she didn’t know she was still in danger. Honestly, I’m sure she figured with Gage there nothing could go wrong.”

“I can’t fucking lose her, Max. I can’t go through this twice.”

Max flies down the highway, “Mia and Trevor, I need you to take my wife home,” Max says, his tone laced with anger.

He glances at me, “I’m going to help you find Jade. We won’t stop until we do.”

I run my hands through my hair, trying to calm myself. It’s no use. All I can think about is what my father is doing to her if he caught her. I promised to fucking protect her. Once again, I’ve failed her. What the fuck was she thinking? She knows he wants to find her. Anger and heartbreak fight for dominance. I’m not sure which way is up. I can barely breathe. How can she do this to me? She knows how fucking gone I am for her.

“Close your eyes and count to ten before you have a fucking heart attack.”

I do as he says but feel like a fucking idiot.

“You need to be able to think clearly. Can you do that? Or do you need to go with Mia, and Trevor can help me?”

Glaring at him, I say, “Look here fucker. That’s my girl out there. I’m not abandoning her. If it kills me, I’m going to find her.”

He sighs, “Then get your fucking shit together. You are no good to her like this.”

What pisses me off is that I know Max is right. I need to be able to think clearly, or I might get us both killed.

Max parks quickly when we pull up to the restaurant and runs to Willow. They exchange heated words and Mia pulls her arm to get her to leave, but she hesitates and stares at me, “Hunter. I’m so sorry.”

I nod because making her feel like shit won’t get me Sassy back. They leave and Max and I take off down the street.

“Check behind the dumpsters. She hid behind one of them before.”

He nods, “Let's split up. We can cover more ground that way. You take Legend Boulevard and I’ll take Indian School Street. If we find her, call the other.”

“Alright.”

He arches an eyebrow, “Does she answer to Sassy or Jade?”

I laugh, “I’m the only one who has ever called her Sassy. She’ll answer to Jade, but she might be afraid that it’s a trap.”

I take off down Legend and begin looking everywhere for her. It becomes clear that it will be time-consuming when I ask myself if she’s in one of the stores or outside. The nausea hits me after going into the tenth store with no sign of her. This maybe it for us. I might never see her again. That thought won’t make me give up. I’ll never give up searching for her until she’s in my arms, dead or alive.

“Sassy?” I call out in an alley.

I come to the back of a restaurant, and the strangest thing happens. I feel her. She’s here somewhere. It sounds crazy, but my girl is here.

“Sassy, baby. It’s okay. Come on out.”

The muffled sobs make me stop and turn. No. She wouldn’t.
