She giggles softly, “Thank you. But what do you want, Hunter? What makes you happy?”

Gazing into her eyes, I answer honestly, “You, baby. It’s always been you. That hasn’t changed. Only you.”

Her eyes flutter closed and then she opens them again giving me that look that makes my heart pound. Nobody affects me, only her.

I stand and reach my hand out for her, “Let’s get you home before you crash from all that sugar.”

CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

JADE

Two Days Later…

I wake to the sun blinding me and Hunter sitting on the bed beside me kissing my neck. It’s a perfect way to start the day.

“Sassy, I have work to do. I need you to behave yourself and not leave the house.”

I nod in agreement.

He places his finger and thumb on my chin and gazes into my eyes with a serious expression, “I need you to promise me. Tell me I can trust you.”

My heart pounds fast with the way he’s looking at me. “I promise, Hunter. I won’t go anywhere. You can trust me. I only left last time because I thought we’d be safe with a guard. I won’t make the same mistake twice.”

“Good girl,” he whispers and then leans in and kisses me softly.

“I love you,” he says as he rises off the bed and leaves.

I haven’t told him I love him yet. I do, I just haven’t said the words. Something changed after we went to the carnival. He showed me his softer side. I know he doesn’t have a soft side for anyone other than me. It makes it even more special. I can’t help but wonder if today's work has anything to do with his father. I didn’t bother asking because he wouldn’t tell me anyway. He tries to keep us, and his work separate. But the sooner Craig is gone, the sooner I can have some sort of normal life. The therapy Hunter insisted I partake in three times a week, has helped. I’m ready to be normal. Go for coffee, shopping, and the movies. Basic things. I have no idea what I’ll do for work, but I even look forward to having a job. All my future plans involve Hunter. I can’t imagine a life without him. The thought alone is devastating.

After taking a shower I head down to the kitchen and make myself a sandwich. I took so long showering, that it’s now almost lunch time.

Taking my sandwich into the living room, I sit on the couch and turn the TV on. There’s a Friends marathon today, so I’m excited about that. As I watch Monica freaking out about furniture being moved around, I take a bite of my sandwich, then hear my phone chime an alert. I take a look, and it’s from Hunter.

I open the text message and can’t help the smile on my face.

Hunter:Are you being a good girl?

Me:Yes, sir.

Hunter:What are you doing?

Me: As if you can’t see me. I’m eating lunch and watching TV.

Hunter:I’ve been too busy to look at the camera. I miss you. I’ll be home in a few hours.

Me:Miss you too.

About an hour later, I hear the alarm system.

System disabled.

I grab my phone and text Hunter.

Me:The alarm system just said system disabled. Should I be concerned?

He must be busy because he doesn’t respond. At first, I worried but then I told myself it’s fine. We are in the middle of nowhere, so there wouldn’t be anyone out here. That’s the funny thing about living so far out. On one hand you don’t have to worry about a lot of crime because there’s no one here. But if someone comes out here to harm you, then you’re screwed because there’s nobody around to help.

I force myself to push the thoughts out of my head and concentrate on the funny show. Hunter will be here in a few hours. I’ll be fine.
