“Are they going to be home soon?”

I smile and shake my head no, “This is a safehouse. They stayed here for a while when Willow was in danger, but they’ve never lived here. Max knows we are here. It’s fine. We will stay until he’s dead and then go back home.”

We make it up to the master suite and she’s very quiet. Maybe she’s processing everything that has happened today. I pull her into the bathroom and start the shower.

“Get undressed.”

I finally get to shed my dirty clothes and Jade isn’t a whole lot cleaner than I am. She doesn’t say a word but gets undressed. I open the shower door and wave for her to get in first. She does.

“Talk to me, Sassy. What’s going on in that beautiful head of yours.”

She shrugs her shoulders as she stands under the water, “I guess I’m wondering about my next step after he’s dead. I’ll be free. I need to figure out what that looks like for me. What I’ll do to support myself. Where I’ll go.”

The panic rises in me like a raging volcano, “You aren’t going anywhere, Jade.”

“Hunter,” she says in a warning.

Grabbing her by the arms, I slam her against the shower wall and growl, “No. I’m not letting you leave me. I just got you back. I don’t want to keep you against your will but if I have to…”

“So, it doesn’t matter that he’ll be dead. I’ll never be free?”

I lick the tear rolling down her cheek, “Sassy girl, you’ve been in my blood since I was a boy. You’ll never be free of me. You can do whatever you want to do with your life. Be whatever it is you want to be. But you won’t leave me. I can’t let you. You are the fucking oxygen in my lungs. I can’t breathe without you.”

She gives me a sexy smile, “Are you asking me to move in with you, Hunter?”

I shake my head, “I don’t remember asking.”

Jade runs her wet hand all over my dirty chest, “I can deal with this controlling asshole you’ve turned yourself into most of the time. Sometimes, I need the boy I fell in love with. Right now is one of those times.”

I arch an eyebrow, “Controlling asshole?”

Grabbing her throat, I hold her against the shower wall, “How about a compromise, Sassy girl?”

Her breathing picks up, I can feel her pulse racing under my hand, and I fucking love it.

“I will never let you leave. So, you have no choice. But I am asking you to live in my house, sleep in my bed, willingly. You are everything to me, baby. My sun rises and sets with you. I can make you happy. I did before. Let me make you happy. I will make every one of your dreams come true.”

She reaches up and gently cups my face in her small hands, “I was never leavingyou, Hunter. I am only trying to figure out where I go from here. I was barely an adult when your father forced me to marry him.”

I look into her eyes when it dawns on me, “We can’t kill him yet. I need to call my lawyer.”

“Why?” She asks.

“His body will never be found. That means he will be declared dead after seven years. Also meaning, you’d be stuck in a marriage to him until then. That can’t happen. He has to sign the papers.”

She forms an ‘O’ with her beautiful mouth, “I didn’t think about that.”

Arching an eyebrow, I tell her the truth, “That can’t happen.”

I step under the water with my body wash and clean off as quickly as possible.

“What’s the plan then?” She asks.

As I rinse the shampoo from my hair, I explain to her, “I’m going to call my lawyer here tonight. He will sign the papers. The divorce will be filed tomorrow. When he doesn’t show up, you’ll be granted the divorce.”

I glance over at her, and she has the most adorable, confused look.

“Hunter, he looks terrible. Isn’t your lawyer going to call the police?”
