I laughed because surely this must have been a joke. A cruel, sick joke.

Craig grabbed me by the throat, “You will be my bride.”

“Your son is my boyfriend,” I whispered, unable to speak normally.

He leaned his face into mine, “Do you want him to live? If you do not obey me, I will gut him like a fucking fish in front of you, then you’ll clean his blood from the floor.”

The whiskey and cigarette smell from his breath made me nauseous. His words, even more so, caused the bile to rise in my throat. Would he really hurt Hunter? His own son? Craig has always terrified me since I was a little girl. Every time he entered the room, the hair on the back of my neck stood up. I knew he was evil. If anyone was capable of killing their own child, it was him.

I turned to my dad, “Daddy, please don’t do this to me.”

“It’s done. Do not be a stupid girl and doubt what Craig is capable of. He’ll be your Master, your husband, your executioner. It’s up to you how long you stay alive.”

He walked out the door, leaving me reeling. I didn’t understand why. But I knew I had been sent to hell, and every day would be worse than the last. I wasn’t wrong.

A few minutes later,Hunter finds me sitting on the couch in Max’s living room.

“Are you okay?” He asks.

I nod, “I’m fine. Better than I expected.”

He sits beside me and takes my hands in his, “You’re full of surprises, Sassy girl.”

“Did you think I’d beg for his life?”

He shakes his head, “I wasn’t sure. I thought you might at least beg for it to be quick without torture.”

“He didn’t offer me a lack of pain. Why should I give that to him? He’s no better than Craig was. If it weren’t for my father, I never would’ve been there. He drove me there and handed me over to a monster. My father is no less responsible than yours. He deserves whatever they give him.”

Hunter chuckles, “It won’t be pleasant. Mia enjoys torture more than the rest of us. All of us enjoy it. But Mia, she gets off on it.”

I reach up and stroke his cheek softly, “Thank you for saving me, Hunter. Twice.”

He presses his lips to mine and kisses me like a man possessed. His tongue tangles with mine in a fiery passion, cupping my cheeks with both hands, he tilts my head, changing the angle, taking more of what he needs. When he pulls back, we are both breathless, his eyes darken with a fierce look, “Sassy girl, I will always save you. I’m so fucking sorry it took so long.”

CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE

HUNTER

My girl is fucking fierce. After everything she’s been through, she should be so broken she can’t see straight. That piece of shit called her weak. Jade is a pillar of strength. When she went to the table and took that knife and plunged it into his abdomen my heart swelled with pride. When he attacked her verbally, she didn’t shrink and cry. She gave him what he deserved.

“Let’s go home.”

She smiles, “Okay.”

We walk out to the car and drive off. The weight of the world has been lifted from my shoulders. Seeing my girl happy and those responsible for her pain dying has done that for me. We still have Joey to deal with but that will happen.

I place my hand on her stomach as I drive, “How are you feeling with the pregnancy?”

Jade smiles a radiant grin, “Good. I haven’t really had any morning sickness.”

“You have a doctor’s appointment in a few days.”

She gazes out the window appearing lost in her thoughts. After several minutes of silence, she asks, “How hard was it to become an assassin?”

I snap my eyes to her, but her gaze is still trained on the window watching the trees as we go by.

“I had to train for months. Otherwise, it wasn’t hard. Why?”
