Setting my drink in front of me, I help myself to the pot roast she made. Jade is just learning how to cook but she seems to enjoy it. The Instapot seems to be her favorite kitchen tool.
I just bought it for her a week ago and already she’s used it several times. Watching her grow in every way, is a delight. Witnessing my girl do normal things for the first time makes my heart expand.
I push my food around on my plate lost in thought. Why the fuck did she say yes when I proposed if she really meant no? I thought I had everything, but I don’t. Clearly, while I think things are perfect, she does not.
“Hunter, is something wrong?”
Shaking my head, I give her a smile, “Nothing is wrong, Sassy.”
I take a bite of the meat, so she doesn’t think I’m not a fan of her cooking.
Jade swallows down her bite of carrot and narrows her eyes at me, “Secrets and lies. That’s not what we do. I know something is wrong.”
Setting my fork down, I take a gulp of my drink before putting it back down on the table and ask, “Are you not happy? Am I not what you want?”
My girl sits staring at me, stunned, not blinking, before she finally speaks, “Why would you ask me that? You have always been what I wanted.”
I shake my head in disbelief, “So you want to be with me you just don’t want to be my wife? I’m good enough for you to be with, just not good enough to marry?”
Jade
“That’s what you think?”
He shrugs, “Is there another reason I don’t know about?”
I scoot my chair out and walk over to his seat and climb on his lap as best I can in my current state. Taking his face in my hands, I say, “Hunter, look at me.”
My big strong man is so vulnerable right now. It’s not often I see him like this.
“I have loved you for so long. That hasn’t changed. It has only grown. I would marry you this second, it’s just…Hunter, I’m fat. Wouldn’t you rather wait until I have the baby and lose weight?”
His jaw clenches noticeably, “God damn it, Sassy. Don’t you know by now? You’re fucking perfect the way you are. You are not fat. That’s our child in there. Our child we made together. If you never lose a pound, I do not care.”
“You’re sure about this?” I ask.
He moves his arm around my waist, holding me close saying, “Let me tell you a little story, Sassy girl. The night everything happened, I bought an engagement ring. I was going to propose that weekend. It was much smaller than the one you have now, but it was what I could afford at the time. I tell you this, not to make you feel guilty about that day. But to tell you I’ve known for over ten years I wanted you to be my wife.”
I stare at him in shock. I had no clue. That night everything changed, and Hunter never got a chance to propose.
I wrap my arms around his neck, “I would’ve said yes even then. Did you throw it in the garbage? In the ocean? Smash it to smithereens?”
He runs his knuckles down the side of my face while his eyes melt into mine, “No, Sassy. I put it on my dresser at night. Every morning, I put it in my pocket. Please don’t ask me why because I don’t have an answer. Even though you never wore it, somehow it made me feel like you were still with me.”
“Hunter,” I whisper. “Two weeks. Can you give me two weeks to find a dress and a place to get married? I don’t want to go to the courthouse.”
He leans his head down, his lips ghost over mine, “Two weeks, Sassy girl. Then you’re mine in every fucking way.”
Hunter reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small diamond ring. He takes my right hand and tries to put it on my ring finger, but it doesn’t fit. So, he slips it onto my pinky while I laugh.
“We will get it sized so you can wear it on that finger.”
I smile at him, “I want to get married on the rooftop at the hotel. Maybe you could sweet talk the owner?”
When the brightest smile crosses his face, I melt against him, “I’ll talk to him.”
Touching his lips, I whisper, “I wish I saw that smile more often. It’s breathtaking. I would do anything to put that smile on your face.”
He kisses me softly and says, “I’ll be smiling a lot over the next week while I prepare that ass.”
