I’d suffered for two years with these unrequited feelings. Whether it was true love or not, the heartbreak it came with was real. And I was sick of it. I wanted to move on from it. I wanted to not give a single fuck about him. Not feel a single thing when I heard him singing on the radio. Not feel one twitch when I caught a glimpse of him on TV. Not a pang when someone mentioned his name.

He was haunting me. He was the one I couldn’t force out of my head even while I was staring at the engagement ring that I intended to give to the woman I loved.

It was his electric blue eyes that I dreamed about at night. It was his presence that I felt in a room even before I laid eyes on him. He exuded the jolting charge that rolled through every nerve ending in my body and had me gasping for breath when he was near. He was quite possibly the straightest guy I knew, and it had to be him that made my cock throb and my balls ache with need.

Fuck this.

I was done wasting another thought on that asshole. I wasn’t going to let him fuck up my life. Remi was my future.

Just then, I heard a quick knock on the front door. Remi had a key, so I only had a few seconds before she would be in my kitchen.

My heart skipped a beat as I opened up the drawer closest to me on the island and stuffed the Cartier box in with the potholders. I closed the small drawer and smoothed the panic off my face seconds before she entered my house.

“Oh my God, Grey,” she shouted, “you won’t believe what happened today!”

I raised my voice so she could hear me. “I’m in the kitchen.”

She strolled into the kitchen with a sassy sway to her hips, rounded the island, and walked straight into my arms. She wrapped her arms around my neck and smiled up at me. Having her pressed against my body calmed the turbulent emotions that had been ripping through me like a tornado moments before.

Our lips met and the simple hello kiss suddenly turned more heated. Lust flared between us. My tongue pressed into her mouth and she gave a little moan that had my cock pressing against the zipper of my jeans. Fuck, yeah, she was what I wanted.

She pulled back with a little breathless gasp. I let her mouth retreat, but kept her tucked in my arms, pulling her firmly against my body.

“Hmm,” she hummed. “We’ll get right back to that in a moment. First, I have to tell you something incredible.”

“Okay.”

I studied her gorgeous face for a moment. It almost hurt to look at her; she was so stunning. Her dark brown eyes were surrounded by long, sooty lashes and could melt my insides with one look. My gaze was drawn to her plump, rosy lips, which were parted and slightly swollen by my hungry kiss. Her complexion had a golden hue, and her long, dark hair cascaded down her back like a silken waterfall. She looked like a goddess. A beaming, radiant goddess put on this earth to tempt mankind.

Her perfect white teeth flashed with a smile. “Mindy Blakedale is retiring.” She bounced on her toes as her voice rose an octave. “Caroline said I’m in the running to replace her. It’s between me and Dawn. I might be the new face of Hollywood Exposé!”

“What?” A bolt of excited laughter rumbled from my chest. I picked her up and spun her around. “That is incredible news!”

“I know!” she squealed. “We each have an assignment and whoever does the better job is getting the promotion. It’s a competition of sorts.”

“Okay?” I put her down. “That’s a little weird. Who’s judging the competition?”

“Caroline and Mr. Hoffman, the owner, are going to decide the winner. She wouldn’t tell me what, if any, criteria they were going to use, but she did say they would take into consideration the amount of buzz we generated from the viewers with our stories.

“I feel like I might have a slight edge because Caroline is my mentor, but Dawn does have a few years of seniority on me. Either way, I absolutely have to kick ass on this crazy assignment.”

I tapped the tip of her nose with my finger. “And what is this crazy assignment?”

She bit on her lower lip. “At first, I thought Dawn had the advantage. She’s assigned something about royals living in America. I was nervous at first because royals are always really popular stories with the viewers.”

My lips twitched. “But...”

“But I’m going to turn my story into something fabulous. I’m doing a piece on a haunted rock band. Supposedly, years ago, something tragic happened and numerous people spotted a ghost hanging around the band, haunting them. I haven’t really looked into any of the details yet.”

“A haunted band?” I gave her the side-eye. “That doesn’t really sound too exciting, Rems.”

“It will be, at least when I’m done with it!” She spun out of my arms and laughed. “Apparently, the band is a little touchy on the subject, so I’m going to go in under the cover of doing a day-in-the-life / human interest story on the band, but all the while I’ll be secretly ghost hunting.”

I groaned. “I’m not a fan of royalty in general, but it does sound more interesting than imaginary ghosts. You have your work cut out for you.” I made sure to keep my voice teasing and light.

She brushed off my comment and continued, “I’ll have to do extensive background research on the band members beforehand to dig up anything juicy I can find. I’m going to be embedded with their tour, so I should have plenty of time to uncover any ghostly dirt that I can. The story is going to have a featured print spot, a huge online presence, and a coveted TV block on Hollywood Exposé. I’ll be creatively responsible for everything: the interviews, photos, and video. It’ll be the biggest story I’ve ever done. It’ll get me huge exposure and just might push me to the top. I could be the next face of Hollywood Exposé!”

An uneasy feeling was creeping in and twisting my stomach. “Embedded in the tour? For how long?”
