While we were sipping wine, gazing at each other across the candle-lit table, I had the brief thought that I should have invited her to my home for our date. I could have impressed her with my fancy house and my cooking skills. I could have woken up with her in my bed, given her an orgasm or two, and then impressed her with a fancy breakfast.

My mother had always said to my sister growing up that a man who cooked was a man that you should marry. Out of necessity, I’d learned a lot about cooking over the last couple of years. It didn’t make sense to hire someone to cook for me when I was on the road with the band so much. It had been easier to figure it out on my own.

Taking her out to dinner had been great. Getting to know each other without either of our friends around had been fun. I’d stepped way back from the spotlight the past few years and now hardly anyone ever recognized me out in public. After witnessing all the shit my bandmates had to go through, I was grateful.

I was excited to get Addison back to my hotel room. She went to the restroom while I was settling the bill. As soon as she got back to the table, I knew something was off with her.

Josie broke into my thoughts about the date. “What happened? You two didn’t have a good time together?”

I slumped into the chair at the kitchen table. “Dinner was great. We were getting along fine. I thought we really had a connection. Then she went to the ladies’ room.”

“And?” she prompted.

“When she got back to the table, she was suddenly talking up a storm. Jumping from one subject to the next. When she wiped her nose with the back of her hand, I fucking knew. My insides froze.” I closed my eyes, trying to blot out the memory. “When I looked closely, I saw that her eyes were bloodshot. Her pupils dilated. And there were traces of white powder under her nostril.”

Josie sniffed her disapproval. “Cocaine?”

“And to think I almost brought her around Kody!” I moaned with frustration. “I can’t believe how fucking stupid I am.”

“Don’t beat yourself up about it.” Josie placed her hand on my shoulder. “You did everything exactly right. When you have a son to think about, it’s true, you can’t bring home women willy-nilly. You’ve got to vet them first, which is exactly what you did.”

“But we were getting along so well. I really liked her. She made me feel good.” I moaned and put my face in my hands. The dumb shit coming out of my mouth was just giving Josie great ammunition to use against me. I was sure she was memorizing every dumb word to throw back in my face someday.

“There’s plenty of fish in the sea.”

I looked up. “Kody’s getting older. He’s going to start noticing the kind of women I have in my life. I can’t just keep hooking up with fast, easy women. Who I bring into his life is important.”

“So, what you’re saying is that you’re looking for a girlfriend and not a fuck buddy?”

While I was talking, Josie refilled my coffee mug and fixed a coffee for herself. Then she put some of her muffins on a plate and brought it all back to the table.

“Something like that.” I made a face, just for the fact that Josie just said fuck buddy. “I need to get to know a woman a little better before I fuck her. Vet her, like you said. Take her out with my friends and see if they get along. If she passes the test, then maybe we can take Kody places together and I can see if Kody likes her.”

She pulled up a chair across the table from me and sat down. “Whoa. You’re getting ahead of yourself. First, you have to just start dating.”

“That’s the problem. I don’t know how to date.”

She slid a muffin over to me. “What are you looking for in a woman?”

I eyed the muffin like it was poison. I had an irrational hatred of raisins and Josie knew that. She was forever trying to sneak raisins into my food. Kody loved them — the little traitor — and never warned me. I eyed the chocolate chips with suspicion before I took a bite.

I thought about what I wanted in a woman while I chewed on the delicious muffin. “She has to like kids. She has to enjoy the music scene and everything that comes with it. And, of course, she has to like sex. A lot of sex.”

“Kids, music, and sex,” Josie summarized. “Does she have to look like a model?”

“No,” I answered right away. “But I have some standards. She can’t be hideous. I don’t want to have to fuck her with a bag over her head.”

“Very funny.”

I smiled. “I’m not as hung up on looks as I used to be. Personality is more important than appearance.” I really couldn’t believe the shit coming out of my mouth today.

I took a sip of my coffee and frowned. It was black; there was no flavored creamer or sugar added to it; yet, it had a weird taste to it. A sweetness that tasted off.

Josie smiled. “I think I know someone who meets those criteria. I’ll set you up. Even if it isn’t a love match, it could give you some good dating practice.”

“I don’t know, Josie. I don’t think set-ups are my thing. I rather find women to date by myself.”

“And how’s that working out for you so far?”
