He shrugged. “I had to learn. I make dinner almost every night when I’m home. It was much easier when everything Kody ate came out of a little jar. Now I have to prepare stuff. Luckily, he’s not a picky eater.”

We brought our plates to the kitchen table and began eating. It was delicious.

“Is Kody okay by himself?”

“He’s fine for short periods of time. I’ll go check on him after we finish eating. Now that we have some privacy, what did you want to talk about?”

I might as well get this over with. “I met with a lawyer to consult about our ... situation.”

I explained to him how the lawyer told me that a judge can only grant annulments for very strict legal reasons such as fraud, incest, or being underaged. We could argue that our ‘mental capacity was unsound’ because we were under the influence of alcohol, but we would actually have to prove that in court.

I put down my fork. “Even if we could prove that we were extremely drunk, the lawyer thought our chances were probably 50/50 that the judge would grant it.”

“What’s the harm in trying?”

“We’d be doing all of this in an open court, Bash. Declaring ourselves mentally unsound before a judge. Court records are public. I don’t want that floating around out in public about myself.” I pushed some food around my plate, suddenly nervous to bring up the most important aspect. “And what about you? What if you ever have another custody issue come up? What if being declared ‘mentally unsound’ could be used against you?”

He stopped eating. “Oh, fuck. I’m sorry, but there’s no way I can chance it.” He shook his head. “Christ, I never even thought about that.”

As soon as the lawyer told me, I knew Bash wasn’t going to go for that. I didn’t blame him, but that meant we’d be married for the next six months.

“I understand.” I took a sip of water. “We can go the divorce route. We can file for an uncontested divorce. It will take six months from the date of filing to go through. Official records of our marriage and divorce will exist, but I’m not sure how anyone would ever find out.”

“That sounds like the better way to go.” He began eating his dinner again. “That’s assuming we actually got married.”

I scrunched up my nose. “I’m pretty sure we did.”

Sebastian came back downstairs from tucking Kody into bed.

I was standing awkwardly in his family room, holding the DVD. “It’s so cute when he calls me Yacey.”

“He has trouble saying his Ls. I talked to the pediatrician about it. She said it was quite common for kids his age and that he’d grow out of it by kindergarten.”

“It’s great that you’re so on the ball with everything. You’re a great dad. Kody is lucky.”

Bash was looking at me funny and I realized that maybe I was gushing a little too much. We weren’t used to being so friendly with each other.

He walked over to me and held out his hand for the DVD. “Well, wifey, are you ready to watch?”

I knew he was joking, but calling me wifey was doing things to me. There was a fluttering in my stomach that I was going to just chalk up to nerves. It had to be.

“No, I’m not ready. I’m so nervous. What if I made a fool of myself? I’m sure I did. I was so drunk.”

“We both were.” He had to pry the DVD from my hands because I was reluctant to let it go. He grimaced for a moment when he spotted the picture of the chapel. “If it’s terrible, we’ll burn it. But only after the divorce, in case we need it for evidence or something.”

“I’m not sure I want to see it. Why don’t we just burn it now?”

He pulled me close and then wrapped his arms around me. “I bet this is going to be hysterical. We were probably hamming it up the whole time. I hope Elvis married us. That would be pretty epic.”

I was enjoying his arms around me way too much. I stepped back. “Only you would think that was cool.”

His eyes lit up. “Should I make some popcorn?”

He was making me feel better. “Yeah, good idea.”

Five minutes later, the popcorn was popped, and the DVD was inserted into his Xbox console. He sat down on the couch with the bowl of popcorn and patted the cushion next to him. “C’mon, wifey. Let’s do this.”

I walked over to the couch and plopped down beside him. “Are you going to call me ‘wifey’ for the next six months?”
