“Don’t get all huffy on me. I set her straight.” She patted my arm. “I told her you weren’t a prude. That you were wetting the willy quite regularly. You were just selective. Then, she accused me of calling her granddaughter a skank. We’re not talking at the moment.”

I shook my head but didn’t say anything. It was better not to fan the flames.

“You haven’t been going out much? You never ask me to babysit anymore,” she prodded.

I folded my arms across my chest. “I’ve got my parents and Kaylie to help. And you’re always busy with Kay’s kids.”

“The twins are adorable. They’re crawling all over the place now. Double trouble, those two.”

“I can imagine.” One of Kody was more than enough at a time.

Josie turned her all-seeing eyes on me. “You’ve been seeing someone.”

“No,” I denied calmly.

“Yes, you have. You’ve released some of that tension.”

Oh, God. Please tell me that’s not what she meant. “What gave you that idea? Or should I say, who? Was it Kaylie?”

Josie scoffed. “Kaylie is up to her neck in diapers and breastfeeding. She wouldn’t know if you were knocking boots with her best friend right under her nose.”

Did Josie know something? My face remained neutral even as I wondered if Kody had mentioned Lacey and any of our outings to Josie.

“Speaking of Kaylie’s best friend,” she glanced over at me before resuming her scan of the crowd of parents beginning to collect their seats, “Lacey is so good with the twins. And with Kaylie. She visits Kay, brings her coffee, takes her out — they work on that charity thingee at the coffee shop, and they go out for girl time. It gets Kaylie out of the apartment so she can recharge.”

I knew they were best friends, but I didn’t realize they still saw each other so much. They didn’t live too far away from each other, so I guess it was easy for her to visit Kaylie during the week. I’d asked Lacey to attend Kody’s performance today, but she said she had an important meeting at work. I tried not to be jealous that I only got to see her on weekends when Kaylie apparently saw her all the time, but it wasn’t working.

Josie continued, “She really is a good friend. I had my doubts about that one early on. I thought she was either dumb as a box of rocks or a first-class bitch. It’s usually one or the other with girls that look like that.”

I shifted back and forth on my feet, wanting the one-sided conversation to end.

“She looks like a modern Marilyn Monroe. Did you know that Marilyn Monroe was about a size 4? She had that curvy figure, but she wasn’t plus-sized. She was a size 12, I think, but in today’s sizes, she’d be a size 4. Lots of people think she was much bigger.”

“Uh-huh.”

“Anyhow, I haven’t seen her around much lately.”

My brow creased. “Isn’t she dead?”

“I’m talking about Lacey. Keep up, drummer boy.” She checked her watch, impatient for the show to start. “She won’t be able to stay away from those boys for too long, so I’m sure I’ll run into her soon.”

“Yeah, probably,” I agreed.

“Kody seems to like her.”

So he had been talking about her. “Yeah, they get along.”

“You know, Lacey really wants kids of her own.”

“She does?” I’m not sure why that was so surprising, considering how great she was with Kody. She never complained about him coming out with us. She never demanded my time over Kody.

“Of course. She goes gaga over babies. Haven’t you ever noticed? She’ll be an amazing mother.”

A teacher came to the microphone and began speaking. Thank God, because that was a weird conversation. Josie always had a hidden motive, and this time she was singing Lacey’s praises for some reason. I scratched at my jaw. I’d never thought of Lacey as a mother before, but I decided that Josie was right. She’d be amazing at it.

It was the weekend after Kody’s preschool presentation. Lacey hadn’t arrived until late last night, so we hadn’t done much talking. She had led me straight to the bedroom, which was fine by me. I loved how we couldn’t seem to get enough of each other.

After I finished getting Kody dressed and fed, Lacey appeared out of nowhere, showered and ready for the day, as if she’d just arrived. She’d been adamant about keeping her overnight visits a secret from Kody. I was no longer sure it would be such a bad thing for him to know, especially since we were dating and exclusive, but maybe I was just being selfish. I guess it depended on how long I thought our relationship might last. It was something I didn’t like to dwell on because I had my doubts. Just how serious was Lacey about us? I didn’t know.
