Another horse trotted through the smoke and stopped directly in front of us. “Drop it, Sai. You’re outnumbered by fae. You’ll get your group killed.” Luz pressed their heels into the stirrups and skimmed their gaze over all of us.

“Luz?” Sai asked, his voice confused.

They cocked an eyebrow.

Sai growled through bared teeth. “How could you?”

My mouth fell open. No, not Luz. I barely knew them, but I couldn’t believe they’d betray Sai. I didn’t think anyone on his team would. They all seemed so close, like a family.

“And let the girl go.” Luz’s eyes darted to me. “Without hurting her.”

Sai frowned at Luz and then looked at me. They were talking about me. Why did Luz assume Sai would hurt me? None of this made any sense.

“Release the girl, drop your magic, and we won’t harm anyone.”

Sai’s jaw jumped. Neia had stepped in front of Elisa, and she shifted to Sai, waiting for the plan. Every member of the group seemed prepared to fight, but they waited for his command. “I’m sorry,” Sai whispered to me. The magic dropped, and the shadows sucked back into him.

My mouth had parted, prepared to unleash a song, and I continued gaping at him. Sai wouldn’t fight. He planned to let Luz take me into their custody with whatever group they now aligned with? I sputtered. “What?”

“If you go with them, you won’t end up hurt.” Sai gave me a look like he wanted me to follow some unspoken agreement. I didn’t know what it was, though.

Horses parted, and another one trotted until it reached the center of the mass of guards. Its rider wore a velvet cloak adorned with gold clasps. He had soft blue eyes, pale skin, and a glittering crown perched over his golden hair. “Prince Sai.”

Sai snarled. “Lennox.”

My heart stopped.

Prince?

Did he just call Sai a prince?

Wait. What did that mean?

Lennox looked down his nose at Sai. “You are not in your territory, Prince.”

“You bastard.”

Lennox studied him for a moment. The soldiers at his side seemed nervous by how long he remained close to Sai. The jewels around their necks glowed. Lennox finally broke his stare and nodded to the man to his left. “Arrest them all.”

Elisa gasped, Ishir and Orman seemed ready to pounce, and Neia tensed, her eyes narrowing.

“You there,” Lennox addressed me.

I stared at him, the shock of the last few minutes freezing my words.

“You’ll ride back with Luz. You’re safe now.”

I continued to stare at the Prince, his hair glowing white as the sun backlit it. I understood how Prince Shaan could have fallen for this man’s false charms. He looked exactly how you’d imagine a fairy prince, all sharp jawline and commanding presence.

Luz dismounted and grabbed my arm, ushering me towards their horse.

My brain started working again. I jerked out of Luz’s grip. “Why?” I screamed.

They gaped and reached for me again, but I stumbled back several steps before tripping over a log and falling.

“Everything all right?” Prince Lennox called.

“All’s fine,” Luz replied without breaking my gaze. “She’s gone through a lot. Let me have a moment to speak with her.”
