They’dmissed. Jack as well as her.

Maybe it was that knowledge that weakened her defences. If he’d demanded, she’d have resisted. Instead this felt like a compulsion neither could resist. A force stronger than either of them. The idea was intriguing and irresistible.

How could she have forgotten his taste, rich, complex and addictive? How could she have gone so long without it?

Bess tilted her head, tugging him closer as she demanded more, arching back under the weight of his eager response.

His body might be hard but his kiss was pure delight. Her skin tingled all over as if bursting to life after almost a year of dormancy. Her blood throbbed hard on its way through her body and between her legs was a telltale softening as if she readied for far more than a kiss.

That might have dismayed her except at that moment Jack pressed his lips to her cheek, trailing fire as he nipped at that incredibly sensitive place below her ear.

‘Elisabeth,’ he growled and she felt it against her overheated flesh as much as heard it.

Jack didn’t sound like a savvy negotiator. He sounded like a desperate man.

Desperate forher.

It’s just sex. Physical attraction. Not love.

But the sexual connection she’d shared with Jack was the closest Bess had ever come to perfection. The nearest thing to love she knew now her mother had gone.

And she’d been so very, very lonely.

It was one thing to cut her losses and leave a relationship that wasn’t good for her. It was another to resist Jack when he hungered for her, when his caresses were ardent and needy and felt like an invitation to paradise.

If she’d been more strong-willed maybe she’d have pushed him away. But she was flawed and fallible, overwhelmed by the urgency of her feelings for this man. And by his desperation that proved they were equals in this.

Jack didn’t do desperate. His specialty was coolheaded logic. Strategy not impulse. Planning not emotion.

Surely this was new? The notion stirred a flicker of hope as well as need.

‘Jack. Kiss me again.’

He did. Ravenously. Thoroughly. Decadently. Their mouths fused, tongues mating in a hungry dance that ignited an explosion of heat in her pelvis.

Bess wriggled her hips closer, seeking relief. His arm slid down her back, a hand clamping on her buttocks and hauling her against his hard groin.

That felt like bliss. The promise of relief for her consuming hunger.

His other hand stroked her neck. There was a tug then her bodice dragged low and friction abraded her nipples.

Bess gasped, realising he’d undone the halterneck of her dress. Jack swallowed the sound, murmuring a hoarse paean of praise that went straight to her head as his hand covered her breast and for a moment she forgot to breathe.

She’d missed this, missed him. Despite everything she’d craved his touch so badly.

Slowly Jack lifted his head. In the darkness it should have been impossible to read his expression but his eyes glittered so brightly she was sure she saw both triumph and desperation there.

The only sound was their harsh breaths, drowning out the lap of the sea.

‘Nowdo you believe I missed you?’ Gently his fingers squeezed her breast and she groaned as incendiary heat burst through her, fire sizzling under her skin, igniting every erogenous nerve centre in her body.

Bess didn’t have words because without waiting for an answer, Jack bent low, his mouth closing over her nipple in a caress that made her arch back hard, offering herself to him.

Jack was the man who’d taught her about desire. About sex and fulfilment. He’d never stinted, always bestowing pleasure and he delivered now, his ministrations sending her higher and higher on the path to desperation.

He changed his embrace, lifting her almost off the ground with the palm tree at her back and his solid body supporting her at the front. She tried to focus on whether she should stop this and send him away. But how could she when every touch, every caress, even the stroke of his warm breath on her bare skin felt like everything she’d ever wanted?

She lost the battle for control when she heard his voice, so low she almost didn’t catch the words. ‘I need you. I don’t know how I went so long without you. There’s been no-one since you, Elisabeth.’
