“I didn’t see anything,” I whispered.

“Who the fuckareyou?” he hissed.

“Just Iris,” I managed. “I really didn’t mean to snoop, I promise. I just woke…and…and you weren’t there and so I went looking for you.”

He picked me up easily, hard hands on my waist, and moved me to the side. With a flick of his wrist, he opened the door, and his long legs took him across the room to the computer in a flash. His brow lifted as he saw the computer screen, still on, with his documents sitting there in plain sight.

Mouth dry, I began backing up. I was so fucking sorry that I’d decided to go back to his room with him. Maybe this was my divine punishment for what I’d let him do.

Quick as a flash, his arm moved, ripping something from the drawer. A pistol trained on me. It looked brutal against the soft backdrop of the office, but not against the rage simmering in his eyes.

My hands came up, clapping over my mouth. The scream was muffled, but it split the room. Ice rushed through my body and glued my feet to the floor.

“Who the fuck are you?” he said, his voice deadly. “Who sent you?”

I shook my head, too petrified to speak.

He took a step closer, never taking his eyes or the gun from me. “You seduced me and got into my room, didn’t you?”

Tears welled up, burning hot as they dragged down my cheeks. I hiccuped, peeling my hands from my face, and ran my wrist beneath my nose. I was pathetic, shaking, my nose dripping and my body shuddering. He didn’t care. He was nothing but hard, cold rage.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered. “I’m nobody, I just did something stupid. Just let me go and I swear…you’ll never see me again.”

He laughed, a short, soft sound. “You’re good.”

“No,” I begged. “I swear, I’m not a spy.”

He cocked his head. “Who said you were a spy?”

“I didn’t!”

“Oh, yes, you just did.”

He surged forward and his hand gripped my upper arm, spinning me around and pinning me against his body. I heard him push his gun into his belt, but that barely lessened my fear. He didn’t need a gun to hurt me, he was brutally strong and almost a foot taller.

He bent me over the bed, pushing me onto my stomach. Fear ripped through my body and I bucked hard against him. My vision flashed red as his hand came up to the back of my neck, brushing my hair aside, and gripping the back of my skull. Holding me in place.

“Relax,” he snapped. “The last thing I want is to touch you like that.”

There was a sharp pricking sensation in the side of my neck and cold flooded through my body. Roaring started in my ears and I cried out, trying to scream for someone. Hoping a passing maid or concierge would hear me.

He slid his fingers over my mouth and I pulled my lips back and bit hard into his palm. His body startled. His stomach tensed against my back and he ripped his hand away, swearing from between his teeth

A little surge of triumph moved through me. Then my vision flashed and began darkening at the edges.

He’d drugged me and I couldn’t fight that off. Whatever he’d injected me with was seeping through me like poison. Dragging me into a darkness deeper than those eyes I’d once thought were beautiful.

CHAPTER FIVE

IRIS

I woke on a wave of nausea. My stomach roiled and the side of my throat ached. Beneath me, the world rocked, and in the distance I could make out the faint cry of gulls. I peeled my burning eyes open. What had he injected me with?

My throat was so dry I could barely swallow. I pushed myself onto my side and my stomach rebelled, threatening to evacuate everything.

I pushed myself up onto my elbows. I was on a boat, I could tell that much, in the lower cabin. There was a small window to my left that showed a patch of blue sky, dotted with fluffy cream clouds. Beside the narrow bed sat a tray with a silver bowl, a glass of ice water, and a bottle of painkillers.

At least my captor had some sense of decency.
