My jaw dropped. I’d never been able to pinpoint that feeling exactly, but somehow he’d cut right to the heart of it and laid it bare. In all its ugliness.

“Yes,” I managed. “How did you know that?”

He cleared his throat. “I knew another woman a lot like you. Shamed, shaped into what the people around her wanted, used, and ultimately broken. Religion didn’t do that to her, but it was used as a tool to make her just a thing to the man who abused her.”

I was quiet. There was so much pain behind his eyes.

“She was devoutly religious, but she used her beads to pray for others, not count their sins,” he said. “She was a good person.”

His mother—he was talking about his mother. Confusion swirled in my chest. Was I supposed to comfort him? Deep inside, I wanted to, but we’d also done nothing but fight with each other up until now. And, although it didn’t feel like it, we didn’t know each other well.

He broke the tension by pinning both of my hands together and yanking me in. My heart began pattering again. The blood surged to my head and my ears rushed. His mouth brushed over mine and he kissed it. When he pulled back, his eyes were shuttered.

Like frost had settled over him.

“I’ll bet I can fix all that,” he said forcefully. “Let me take you upstairs and fuck the shame out of you, princess, and you’ll be so tired you won’t be able to feel guilty about it.”

CHAPTER THIRTEEN

DURAN

That was the wrong thing to say, but I needed out. Physical closeness was easy, emotional closeness wasn’t my area of expertise. She drew back like she’d been slapped. The familiar scrunch of her brows returned, along with a pout I was familiar with at this point.

We’d gotten too intimate and it was my fault. I’d never intended on telling her anything about me. Much less about my past.

“You’re disgusting,” she said, disappointment in her voice. “I thought for a second you were human, but joke’s on me.”

My phone beeped. With her still in my lap, I reached for it and swiped. The boat was here, waiting for us on the shore. She gave a short huff and started to wriggle away. My hand shot out, sliding around her waist to keep her still.

“No,” I said. “Keep your ass right where it is.”

Another message appeared. This was from Lucien and it was brusque as usual.

Confirm when items are secured.

I typed out an answer and sent it. She sat quietly, her bare thighs still wrapped around my waist. I was surprised she wasn’t fighting me to get away. My ego purred at the idea that she liked being in my lap. When I set aside my phone and looked up, she sent me a dark glare.

“May I get off your lap, your majesty?”

I arced my brow. “I like that attitude. Good girl.”

Her cheeks went pink. “Shut up.”

“The only way I’ll be quiet is if you shut me up with your cunt on my face,” I said.

Her jaw dropped. This time she jumped from my lap and pushed her tight skirt down her thighs. I dragged my eyes up those curvy, long legs and let them linger on the little dip of her pussy beneath the fabric.

“You’re disgusting,” she said, lifting her chin.

“So are you.”

Her fists clenched as she trembled with annoyance. I rose and brushed off my suit, buttoning it. My hand shot out and closed around her wrist, pulling her against my body.

Her breasts heaved. Fighting the tight neckline holding them back. My mind flitted back to when she’d taken off her bra that night at the resort. There was no doubt in my mind that she had the most perfect breasts I’d ever seen. It was too bad we were at odds.

Otherwise, I’d take her top down and put my mouth on those hard, pink nipples. I’d suck them and curl my tongue around them. I’d cup the soft heaviness of them and leave little marks on her skin with my teeth.

I’d turn her around and fuck her naked in front of a mirror. Just so I could see her pretty ocean eyes grow wide and watch her tits bounce at the same time.
