Triumphant, I hopped down from the counter, crossing my arms over my chest. “So why can’t Lucien know that youlikeme?”

“I don’t like you,” he said flatly.

“Now you just sound immature.”

He emptied his espresso and reached for his jacket. “We’re done with his conversation. I haven’t brought you back because I fucked up bringing you here in the first place. It’s a secure location and now it’s been compromised. Not to mention how much it set me back to kill those men. You’re here because you’re a smoking gun, a liability.”

His black eyes were lifeless as he turned on his heel. There was a sudden tenderness in my chest…like his words had hurt me. I followed him out into the hall.

“Wait,” I said.

He paused, hand on the doorknob.

“Are you…angry with me for whatyoudid?”

He sighed and reached into his pocket and took his sunglasses out. Shrouding his eyes from me.

“Pack your things, princess,” he said shortly. “I have a business trip and you’re going with me.”

“After what happened on the last one?” I said.

“This time, you will not leave my side if I have to handcuff you to my wrist,” he said, his smirk appearing. “That’s a tempting picture.”

“Don’t be vulgar,” I whispered, blushing.

He left the door, walking slowly back down the hall until he stood so close I could feel his breath. His hand came up and brushed back my hair, tucking it behind my ear. My heart quickened and heat pooled between my legs.

“Would you like that?” he said softly. “Perhaps when we get there, I’ll cuff your little wrists to my bed and eat your pussy until you soak the sheets. And when you’re so weak with how hard I made you come, I’ll fuck you.”

My ears roared. I couldn’t see his eyes, but I knew they were on fire.

“No,” I said, my voice cracking. “No sex.”

He cocked his head. “Who are you saving it for? Some well behaved man who thinks it’s a sin to eat you out? Is that the kind of man your parents want you to have?”

My jaw was on the floor. He was right…but how dare he speak to me like that. He slid his fingertip up my throat, tilting my chin back.

“You’re scared because you know I will fuck you better than your hypothetical husband ever will and when you’re laying on your back ten years from now, after he pumps twice and leaves you hanging, you will touch your pussy to the memory of how I fucked you and regret choosing duty over pleasure.”

He flicked his finger up, releasing me. My jaw slid open as he strode down the hall and disappeared through the front door.

I wanted to cry, but my eyes were so dry they made sticky noises when I blinked. Instead, I wandered upstairs and sat on the edge of my bed. My chest hurt, but mostly I was angry.

Angry that he was right.

Angry that he’d opened me up and read me like a book.

Angry that every time I closed my eyes, I saw crushed rose petals and naked thorns.

Jaw set, I packed my things into a suitcase I found in the closet. Then I pulled on clothes I thought might be good for traveling—soft linen shorts and a tank top with sunglasses.

Around noon, there was a low hum from over the island and I walked out onto the back porch to see a private plane circle and land a short walk down the beach. The sliding door opened and Duran stepped out onto the deck. He was on his phone again, mirrored sunglasses glinting, the open front of his suit jacket flapping in the wind.

He lifted a hand as an attendant crossed the sand, covering his phone.

“Can you bring the bags in the hall?” he said. “I’ll make sure she gets on. Thanks.”

The man nodded and Duran turned to me, holding out his hand.
