“I’d like you to wear this for me.” He slid a ring onto my ring finger——the ring finger of my right hand. “You can open your eyes now.”

It was a gorgeous friendship ring, with two heart-shaped stones, a ruby and a sapphire, interlocked in a circle of diamonds. The ring was stunning——Liam didn’t understand the wordunderstated. It probably cost more than a new car.

I pulled him into a long kiss, another of our true boyfriend-girlfriend kisses, the kind I had dreamed about as a little girl, a princess-and-Prince-Charming kiss.

I floated off the floor in his arms.

The oven timer sounded.

We ignored it. His tongue explored mine, and his hands roamed to all the right places, leaving trails of sparks that branded my skin.

Time stood still. In my bare feet, I tired of clinging to his neck and jumped up to wrap my legs around him. My skirt got in the way, and I almost sent us both to the floor trying to wrap myself around him.

He broke the kiss and laughed. “Does that mean you like it?”

I regretted the sudden loss of his body heat against me. “Liam, it’s beautiful.”

“A beautiful lady deserves no less,” he said sweetly.

“Does this mean we’re going steady?”

“Something like that,” he responded. He led me to my seat at the table and pulled out the chair.

The slight smell emanating from the kitchen indicated it might not have been good to ignore the timer. “I think you might want to check the oven.”

He quickly rescued the asparagus and took the spaghetti off the stove. A few minutes later, Liam lit the candles and served me spaghetti and meatballs with roasted asparagus on the side. Accented with wine and candlelight, our dinner was a simple affair, but more romantic than any dinner out could have been——even if the asparagus was toasted beyond perfection.

My man had made the effort to learn to cook this for me, and the love in his eyes every time I glanced at him made me tear up. It was unlike any evening I could recall. We were eating together as a true couple; nothing was fake about this.

I kept looking down to admire the large ring on my finger. The blue and red hearts touched each other as I felt ours did.

The dessert was Sara Lee from the grocer, but I wasn’t complaining. The effort he had already made was amazing. Sometimes the simplest things were the most significant.

“You know there’s a Bogart marathon on tonight,” he said between bites. “CasablancaandAfrican Queen. How does that sound?”

“I’m not sure I feel like Bogart tonight.”

“What would you like to watch then?”

“Can I have whatever I want?” I stroked his leg with my foot.

“Sure.”

“Promise?”

“Of course.”

I slid a foot up the inside of his leg under the table with a wink as he looked up. I licked the chocolaty goodness from my spoon in the most seductive way I could manage.

The lion emerged in his eyes, and his lips curved into a wicked smile, one that could only mean I was having the desired effect. He eyed me hungrily.

I took another spoonful and licked at it. “The lady has a better idea.”

He swallowed. “I can tell.”

I slid my foot up higher.

He shifted in his seat.
