“You must still be drunk, sis. You’re not making any sense. You don’t want him to leave, and he wants to stay. Looks like a happy ending to me. Make-up sex is next on the agenda.”

She didn’t get who he was. “Viv, it’s not so simple. He made a promise, and that’s the one thing he lives by. If I ask him to break that promise, it’ll eat him up. It’ll end up tearing us apart. I just know it.”

“Get up and take a shower. I’m taking you out to get some food. Maybe then you’ll make more sense, because right now, you’re just twisting things up.”

I sat up too rapidly, and my head objected. “I am not.”

Liam

A sound somewhere woke me.

I managed to get an eye open. The image was fuzzy, but I could make out a bottle on the coffee table in front of me. I pulled myself up enough to grab it and took a swig, not bothering with a glass.

Hair of the dog.

It would help with this fucking headache.

The banging at the door roused me again.

“Liam, open up.” It was Josh.

I ignored him and lay back down.

I closed my eyes.

“Liam, let me in.”

After a while, the pleas stopped and peace returned.

What day was it? The answer didn’t come. There had to be an easier way to get drunk that involved more drunk time and less hangover time. That was going to be my next invention. The way my head pounded this morning, it would sell like hotcakes——and at almost any price.

Sleep was what I needed.

It hurt less when I slept.

Chapter 33

Liam

The room was shaking.

The earthquake wouldn’t stop.

“Wake up,” she said.

I struggled to get an eye open. One was welded shut with some kind of eye-crud superglue; the other wouldn’t focus.

“Wake up, Liam,” she repeated, shaking me more violently.

The eye I’d managed to open gave me a fuzzy image. “Katie?” My sister was here, or this was a monster fucking hallucination. “You’re not real.”

“I’m real, and right now I’m real serious. Get your fucking ass into the shower and get cleaned up.”

I managed to sit upright and reached for my bottle again, but not quickly enough.

Katie grabbed the bottle in a blur. “No way, Jose. You’re not getting any more of this.”
