“And not coming in to work,” Josh added.

“I just felt like it,” I explained. “Now that you’ve talked to me, when is your return flight?”

She picked up her juice glass. “Fat chance. I’m not leaving until I meet this girl and kick her ass.”

“She doesn’t need beating up, and since when are you in charge of my dating life?”

She speared a piece of bacon. “Since you took a swing at Nick in high school and decided to interfere in my life.”

“Seriously?”

She finished chewing. “If you don’t start talking, I’m going to invite Nick to come out and join us.”

Josh was staying remarkably quiet, but he couldn’t stifle his laugh at Katie’s threat. I pointed a threatening finger at him.

“I didn’t say a thing,” he said, putting his hands up in mock surrender.

The last thing I needed was any more time with Nick Knowlton. I had no choice now. Katie didn’t indulge in idle threats.

“Her name is Amy.”

Katie glared at me. “Josh told me that part. Let’s skip to the fight or whatever.”

I finished the piece of bacon I had started while Katie waited, glaring at me. I could drag this out and waste her time. It served her right.

“There was no fight. She left me a day or two ago.”

Josh shook his head. “That was a week ago.”

“What day is it?

Josh double checked his watch. “Wednesday.”

I had completely lost track of time. It had been a week——a whole week. I thought back, and as much as I tried, I couldn’t remember a thing after going over to see her.

“Is she okay?” I asked Josh.

He finished chewing. “This week she’s going into work regularly is all I can tell you.”

His words were a relief. I didn’t know what else I’d expected.

“She left and said we couldn’t be together anymore,” I said.

Her words were still crystal clear in my memory. As much as I wanted them to change, they were the same each time I recalled them. “It can’t work,” she had said. The words had a deadly finality to them.

Katie finished her bacon. “And?”

“And that’s it,” I told her.

She picked up her phone. “I’m dialing Nick if you don’t start talking.”

I let out a breath. “Alright.” I was absolutely not having Nick here. “It started when Uncle Garth called and said he got me into Johns Hopkins med school.”

“That’s good news. You wanted to go, right?”

I took another forkful of eggs before continuing. “Yeah, I did, but that’s in Baltimore, and Amy’s tied down here in Boston.”

“But it’s only a quick flight. You can spend every weekend together. It’s not like you can’t afford the flights.”
