Her summary emphasized another thing I admired about Amy. She viewed her work as a team effort, and her employees as an extended family. I hoped she and I would make an equally good team on our project.

We reached the MBTA station a block later, after waiting for the light. As we approached the glass doors of the station entrance, she turned to me and raised up for a goodbye kiss.

As I kissed her I pulled her closer, and held her tighter and longer than I should have. She tasted so sweet, and I breathed in the cherry scent of her hair. I broke the kiss. Any longer, and I would have been tempted to hoist her over my shoulder and carry her back to my penthouse for a do-over of Tuesday night.

“I have something for you.”

“I can tell,” she said playfully, rubbing her thigh against the bulge in my pants.

I laughed. “A reaction to your beauty.”

“You have the oddest way of saying nice things.”

I fished the Cartier pouch out of my pocket. “No, I really do have something for you.” I pulled her to the side to get out of the path of the crowd coming up the escalator and exiting the station.

Her eyes widened as she noticed the velvet parcel I had retrieved. “What is that?”

“A small token of my appreciation.”

The breadth of her smile increased second by second as she pulled the small red jewelry case from the pouch and opened it. “My God, Liam, you didn’t.”

“I thought the green would go well with your eyes tomorrow night.”

I knew the first time I saw her that emeralds would complement the green of her eyes and look spectacular on her. The box contained emerald stud earrings and a matching necklace. The necklace’s stone was a rectangular-cut, eleven-carat, almost flawless emerald——all from Cartier, my store of choice.

“But I can’t accept these.”

“If you don’t like the color, we can change them out for something else.”

She gasped. “No, they’re beautiful. I just can’t… These are too expensive.”

I gazed into those wondrous green eyes of hers. “Don’t worry, I saved money by having them put all three in one box. And as my girlfriend, you wouldn’t wear anything less.”

“I’ll give them back after tomorrow night, then.”

I glared at her. “I thought your parents raised you better than that. Returning a present like this would be downright rude where I come from.”

She sighed and nodded. “Thank you, Liam. They’re beautiful.” She closed the box, returned it to the pouch, and placed it in her purse.

She surprised me with a sudden bear hug. “Thank you.”

“You said that already.” I grabbed her ass and squeezed hard, eliciting a delicious little yelp from her. “I’ll pick you up at five tomorrow.”

She released me. “But you don’t know where I live.”

I had done my research and already programmed her address into my phone. “I have my sources.”

She smiled as she backed toward the glass doors of the station. “See you at five then.”

The feeling of her ass under my hand stayed with me the whole walk back home.

Chapter 12

Liam

I poweredup my phone as I headed downstairs to my car the next morning. I’d missed a call from Uncle Garth——an important part of Covington Industries and the person I could always turn to for help. If he couldn’t get it done, he knew somebody who could.

I returned the call via Bluetooth after settling into traffic for the drive.
