Being late was inconsiderate, but this much early was worse. I would hate having Liam watch me get ready, making me more nervous than I already was.

I swung open the door, ready to complain.

“Surprise,” Vivienne said as she waltzed past me into my apartment.

I closed the door behind my unexpected guest. “Viv, what are you doing here? I have to go.”

She turned and a Vivienne-only wicked smirk burst across her face. “I’m here to help you get ready for your date,” she announced.

“It’s not a date.”

“The hell it’s not.” She pointed at my feet. “You got your nails done.”

Busted. “I was due,” I lied.

I’d had my hair blown out too. I was as nervous about this evening as I had been for my high school prom. Liam, not to mentionmywhole company, was depending on me. I needed to make a good impression as a convincing girlfriend. How hard could it be?

My stomach lurched, answering the question.

Vivienne followed me back into the bathroom. “So how are we going to put your hair up? How about a chignon? A horizontal one this time?” She grabbed a hair brush and started to brush out my hair behind me. “I watched this cool YouTube video, like, four times. I’ve got it down.”

“Not today.”

“But you always do a French twist. Be adventurous. Try something different.”

The last adventurous thing she’d suggested had led to my all-nighter with Liam, so it wasn’t a bad idea.

“No, I’m going with it down tonight.”

She stopped brushing and put her hands on her hips. “So who are you, and what have you done with my big sister? You always wear it up for important dates.”

“I told you this is not a date.” I didn’t admit I was wearing my hair down tonight for Liam.

Vivienne huffed. “And I’m going to lose ten pounds next week. You’re having dinner with your bazillionaire boyfriend——”

“Fake boyfriend,” I shot back.

“And this other couple. Who are they? The…”

“Schmulians,” I told her.

“Right, and you’re sitting here agonizing over your makeup because you’re only going out to get hot dogs with, like, the most eligible bachelor in Boston, right?”

We had talked last night, and she already knew the answer to the question. Liam was taking us to Mooo, one of the nicest, most expensive restaurants in town——a few dozen steps above hot dogs.

I put down my makeup brush and glared at her reflection in the mirror. “You can leave, Viv, if you're just going to hassle me.”

“And miss my chance to meet Mr. Wonderful? No way. Since you seem so intent on pushing him away, let your little sister get in line to be next on his list.”

I rolled my eyes.

She'd wanted to stop by the restaurant last night to meet Liam officially. My mentioning I would throw a fork at her if she did had stopped her from carrying out her evil plan. But obviously, persistence ran in our family.

After I finished my makeup and slipped on my dress, I pulled the Cartier box from the drawer and added the gorgeous emerald earrings Liam had given me last night. Then I slipped the necklace around my neck, but I couldn’t manage the clasp.

Vivienne came up behind me. “Here, let me.” She wrestled with the clasp and was successful in the end.

Her jaw dropped when I turned around. “Where did this come from? It looks so real.”
