The waitress returned with our pancakes and my coffee.

Vivienne loaded up her fork. “Must've been more than that.”

I smoothed the butter on top of my pancakes. “There was. He told the other couple he called me Sunshine because I brought warmth to his soul, and I brightened his outlook every day. You believe that shit?”

“I wish a guy would say that about me,” Vivienne replied. “He definitely gets an A for effort.”

“The scary part,” I continued, “was in the car later. I told him it was pretty good bullshit he was slinging. He got so mad we nearly crashed.”

Vivienne jerked upright, her mouth open.

“He told me to never call him a liar again. He said he meant every word.”

Vivienne finished chewing her bite of pancake. “Now that's a grade-A, number-one boyfriend.”

I put my coffee down. “He's not my boyfriend, got it?”

“First he fucks your socks off, and then he takes you to dinner and says romantic shit like that. We need to get you a new dictionary, Amy. That's the fucking definition of boyfriend——make thatgreatboyfriend.”

“But it's all fake.”

Vivienne leaned forward. “If it's so fake, why did he get mad at you for calling him a bullshitter?”

That was a question I couldn't answer. It was supposed to be fake, but last night it had certainly seemed real——right up until I didn't get a good night kiss.

Vivienne put her fork down. “If you don't appreciate him, I'll let him park his shoes under my bed any day. My God, the man is gorgeous and richer than Midas. How can you not be doing everything you can to be the best girlfriend possible? Convince him to be your real boyfriend, if you insist that's not what he is already. If you don't, we need to send you in for some kind of brain scan.”

Liam was someone I didn't ever intend to share with my sister. He was unpredictable, and could be annoying, but the more I thought about last night, the more I looked forward to spending time with him, lots of time. I'd said I would try to please him, and I was planning on it.

A blueberry escaped Vivienne’s plate and stopped when it hit my coffee cup. I stuffed my mouth full of pancake to avoid talking.

“I say you have shit for brains,” Vivienne informed me.

She might be right.

I was certainly confused. Liam wasn't an easy man to understand. He’d said all those wonderful things to me, and insisted it was how he felt. So why didn't he kiss me at the end of the night, even if he wouldn't sleep with me?

I finished chewing. “He didn't kiss me good night,” I blurted.

Vivienne's brow furrowed. “Hello, Amy, this is the new millennium. If he doesn't kiss you, you go right ahead and kiss him. You don't need anybody's permission to show him how you feel. I swear, I shouldn't have to tell you this stuff. Every girl in Cambridge would be envious of your situation.”

My phone rang. When I pulled it out of my purse, Liam’s name was on the screen. I tilted it toward Vivienne. “It’s him.” I shouldn’t have held it anywhere near her. She grabbed it.

She answered the call. “Amy Hudson’s line, may I help you?”

I kicked her under the table.

She yelped. “No, that was just your girlfriend kicking me for answering her phone… Yeah, she’s like that sometimes.”

I scowled at her and held out my hand. “Give me that back.”

“Yes, she’s here, but first, Liam, I have a question. Did you mean it when you said you’d give me a ride in that cool car of yours?”

I lunged for the phone, but she slid sideways in the booth, out of reach.

“Sounds great. Nice talking to you.” She handed the phone to me finally.

“Hi, Liam, I apologize for my sister’s lack of manners.”
