She picked up quickly. “Hey, handsome.” The mere sound of her voice put a smile on my face.

“Schmulian just called, and we’re on for dinner again tonight at seven. I hope you don’t mind, but I committed you to cook for us.”

“Sure. Part of the service. I’ll head out now, and I’ll text you a list of things to get at the market on your way,” she replied.

“Works for me. See you soon,” I told her, without adding the part I was thinking——that I couldn’t wait to see her again.

We make a good team.

Amy

Tears clouded my eyes. Two steps to my right I located a tissue. After a few dabs, I blinked and could see again.

The sound of a key in the door startled me. I wasn’t ready.

I went back to chopping the onions.

“The market was a zoo,” Liam said putting down the grocery bags.

I put down the knife. “Usually is after work.” I couldn’t resist the impulse to hug him.

He squeezed me back tightly. “And why do I deserve this treatment?”

I held him close, not wanting to give up the warmth of his chest against mine. “Just because.”

“Okay,” he said stroking my back.

I reluctantly released him. “I have good news, and better news. Which do you want to hear first?”

He opened the fridge. “Let's start with the good news, then move on to the really good stuff.” He pulled a bottle of champagne out and started removing the foil wrapper.

My enthusiasm bubbled over. “We’re going to land another investor,” I squeaked. “Eleven million. Can you believe it?”

His brow creased. “Another investor? That’s nice.” His tone didn’t convey the happiness the news deserved. He stopped working on the champagne bottle. “Who?”

“And the better news,” I continued, hoping he would like what I had to say. “Is that with this much, you won’t have to put in your other ten if you don’t want to.”

Naturally he would see the upside to this; he’d been reluctant to invest in us without having control, and now he could minimize the investment since it didn’t fit his agenda.

His eyes bore down on me. “Who?” he demanded coldly.

I cut another slice off the onion. “The Winterbourne Group.”

The last semblance of a smile washed off his face. The champagne bottle made a loud clank as he put it down on the island’s granite. “No.”

His reaction caught me off guard. “What do you meanno?”

He glowered at me. “I won’t allow it. Not them. Anybody but them.” A dangerous undercurrent shrouded his voice. His demeanor was as frosty as his words.

A shiver ran through me. “You can’t tell us that.” I hadn’t seen this side of the man before. It was scary. “It…it’s our company. If you’re jealous of them, just get over it.” I stomped my foot. I, too, could be mad. “You don’t get a say.”

“Check your paperwork,” he said. “I have to approve any other investors.”

He approached and grabbed my arm. “Anybody else and I would let you, but not them. They’re dangerous.”

I pulled away. “That’s not fair.” My legs trembled. “That’s it? No discussion?”
